Some stories are more compelling than others. Some Latina females have compelling stories. So do some white males.
Is this story compelling?
A woman went to private grade school, high school, college and law school, all in the normal sequence. Immediately after law school, at age 24, she worked as an attorney and later became a judge. Married, divorced, no kids. Last year she made over $200,000 in salary, but that doesn't go as far as one might think in Greenwich Village, where she owns her condo.
There were some tough times. Her father died when she was nine. She grew up in public housing. She is diabetic and needs insulin, a condition shared by about 1.2 to 2.4 million others in the US. Her mother worked hard as a nurse, at times holding two jobs.
Oh, and she's Latina.
Of course, I'm talking about Sonia Sotomayor, who said,
"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
Or not. I hear that some white males go to school and become attorneys. Some have diabetes. Some even have mothers who worked hard.
Some had a parent die when they were young. Of the dozen or so close male friends I grew up with, two lost a parent in grade school or high school. My own three children lost their mother (my wife) when they were eight and two.
About that public housing thing, we are reminded by people like Jesse Jackson

Shape up, Sonia, life is tough and then you die!
compelling: fire fighter, father of 4, quit his second job to study for a promotion in the fire department. He spent $1,000 on books, studied, and passed the exam. He and the others who passed (all white, one Hispanic) lost out of their promotions because no Black men had passed the exam. These passed over men sued. And, a three judge panel including Sotomayor ruled in favor of the employer.
Now, that is what I call unfair and racist.
“A woman went to private grade school, high school, college and law school, all in the normal sequence. Immediately after law school, at age 24, she worked as an attorney and later became a judge.”
Yeah, that’s the hardscrabble, Latin story all right. No doubt it’s imparted exceptional ethnic wisdom.
Judge Sotomayor's statement does not bother me because it is racist. It bothers me because it reveals shallowness and a poverty of experience that has no place on the bench of the Supreme Court.
That's gonna leave a mark.
Yeah and we are the racists?!
Hmmmmm......let me think.....
Dang if you're not right, I really don't care.....
LOL
White Man, Father of four white baby crackers?
Just four more reason to give him the shaft in Sotomayors opinion.
Agree they should be moved to the projects before the WH turns into a crack house.
Thanks for posting!
“”Yeah, thats the hardscrabble, Latin story all right””
They trot these people out to pour out the hard struggles they’ve overcome and at the same time are telling others they can’t make it without the government stepping in. I don’t think any of them live in the same world we do.
I’m glad you enjoyed the post.
If my family didn’t have a garden growing up, we would have gone very hungry many, many nights. I am a white guy from NW Iowa. Boo-hoo.
Of course, I'm talking about Sonia Sotomayor, who said,Whoa (Head Slaps self)..... hold on a sec.
"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
Now if this is so, and a Fed Judge is *always right*, then the FBI, DoJ and every Law Enforcement agency better change their Crime Stat Reports on Hate Crimes where 'Hispanics' are included as 'WHITE'. They need to have a new category, 'Hispanic on Black Hate Crimes'.
Then again, if they did this 'White on Black' (cough) 'Hate Crimes' wouldn't exist. The stats would be so low they'd have to carry it to four decimal places to arrive at a percentage.
So thanks Judge Sotomayor.
You've been a big help in clearing up this Miscarriage of Justice that's been ongoing against White People.
I'm a woman, I have Lupus. I had a poor family and lost my father at the age of two. I came up through the public schools, many different ones, because we moved six times as a child due to my alcoholic stepfather's poor money management.
I usually only had one pair of shoes each year to attend school in. The kids all made fun of my few poor looking clothes. I was shy, I never invited any of my friends over to see our bare bones rental homes because, yes, even my minority friends had more than we did.
From the age of five, I walked to Church, by myself, because my parents wouldn't go with me. It was there that I learned about loving your neighbor as yourself and the presence of the Holy Spirit all around us.
I studied despite the inner city public school environment. I worked hard at several minimum wage jobs from the age of 16, then started a family much too young.
I was the first person on either side of my family to attend college since the 1700's. I did my studies after the kids started school. I stayed up until 2AM every night attending to all my required reading because I had to get dinner and prepare the children for school the next day at 7AM.
I started work in the medical field working with minorities and many a diabetic patient, amongst thousands of other conditions.
In addition, I haven't quit working even though many people my age have, dispite the fact that my spine began deteriorating at the age of 30 from all the years of labor. I didn't have time to take care of myself. I keep pushing because I'm trying my best to have a retirement savings so I won't be a finacial burden to my family or society.
The the only difference is...I'm white....
and my sons and daughters are white.
My sons can't help that they are white, male and heterosexual anymore than a minority can change who they are, nor should they try to. I taught them to be respectful of others...all others. They have never harmed anyone in their life. Why in heaven would anyone want to harm them?
The last thing I ever dreamed possible, after all the care I have given to others while I've struggled my entire life, is that some racist/sexist bigot would tell my sons that they are are now the lower class and that their "chickens are coming home to roost".....what the h@ll is that supposed to mean anyway? Is this what we have all struggled for all these years?
If you put a racist/sexist bigot of any stripe in charge...
I don't care who they are or where they came from, the result will be that many, many long suffering hearts are going to reevaluate what a long life of service to the poor and the minorities has really meant.
Don't do it...just don't.
