Plan of Attack (Bob Woodward versus the White House)
The New Republic ^ | June 17, 2009 Issue | Gabriel Sherman

Posted on 05/31/2009 6:56:16 AM PDT by SonOfDarkSkies

In early May, White House Counsel Greg Craig circulated a memo inside the West Wing. Part of a series of memos on protocol, it explained how to deal with writers researching books and articles on the White House. (Craig's unsurprising instructions: Clear interview requests with the press office.) While the memo didn't mention any journalists by name--and while there are currently no fewer than half a dozen major reporters under contract to write books about the nascent Obama presidency and the 2008 campaign, any of whom could conceivably end up embarrassing the administration--there is one person in particular the White House is undoubtedly nervous about: Bob Woodward.

...

And an especially hungry Bob Woodward is especially bad news if you're one of the people being written about. "Good luck," another Woodward friend told me when I asked if the White House will succeed in keeping Woodward out. "If you want to hide things from Bob, it always comes out. It always does."

Woodward is a back stabber with a very mixed history of accuracy. I really liked The Brethren though.

Hey - Bob can talk to a comatose man. You don’t get much better than that.

A bit OT - I’ve met & had some professional dealings with Carl Bernstien, an openly proud communist like his parents. He has a long reputation of expecting people to give him things rather than paying for them...just like an elitist commie. I can vouch for that reputation.

You know what? If a decent writer wanted to get super wealthy, a book on the dictator and his staff, and their behavior in the White House could go huge.
What he really said about the Churchill bust, the goings in in the drunken wed nite happy hours, Air Force One buzzing NYC,, His drunk on power act as he nationalized businesses,,etc. There has to be endless fodder.

Id like someone to write that. Who will be first?

I wasn't aware of that. Very interesting factoid about his parental environment, which I just confirmed.

I suspect that Woodward shares his views but is less ostentatious about it. I wouldn't trust him to be objective about the Left.

I wonder why that factoid hasn’t seen wider distribution over the years? Reminds me of BeZer0’s upbringing.

Wide distribution of embarrassing factoids is reserved for conservatives. Liberals protect their own.

Woodward doesn’t have Colin Powell around to spill the beans.

That's my thinking, also.

Unlike most politicians, Obama is almost completely mysterious. Sooner or later, someone (or several someones) will spill the beans and when they do, some clever writer is gonna make a forture!

That said, the writer will more likely be of the Kitty Kelley variety than the Woodward ilk.

Give it a wack. Do a search on Obama here, distill the data, and there's your book. Pull in Biden's speeches and public comments, and you've got the insider info...

People need to understand Woodward's M.O. for getting information. He plays a simultaneous carrot/stick kind of game where he strokes people's egos and tells them what OTHER people are saying about THEM for his book ... ostensibly so they have a chance to "respond" to what is being said about them.

Actually, if you read Kessler’s The CIA at War, people such as Bill Casey’s widow testified that the former CIA Director was still able to talk while he was dying in the hospital. Also, former assistant CIA Director, now Secertary of Defense, Robert Gates said that Casey was still able to talk and even summoned him a couple of times to his bedside. A formally investigation by the CIA, revealed that Casey had forty-three meetings or phone calls with Woodward, including many alone at his house.

Also, if read All The President’s Men, Woodward stated that he was a card-carrying Republican. Maybe he’s just an old-fashioned reporter digging up the facts. Just look at The Agenda. I will agree, however, that he and Bernstein did nothing but “encourage” a whole generation of reporters to look for dirt where there is none, and promote activist journalism.
