Charity Poker Game Raided By Police (food bank money seized)

Money Seized At Event

BUXTON, Maine -- Buxton police raided a building where people were trying to raise money to give free food to the needy.

It happened at the Narragansett Pythian Sisters Temple on Route 22 where people were playing the card game Texas Hold'em to benefit the Buxton Community Food Co-op.

But state police said the game was illegal.

That's because whenever a gambling tournament is held to raise money for a group and takes place at its headquarters, a permit is needed and the co-op didn't have one.

So, state police seized cards, poker chips and $500 in cash -- money the food co-op desperately needed.

A member of the co-op, Joann Groder, said she is very, very sad about what happened.

"We've had a lot of people who come here -- people who are out of work, people who have cancer. We have a lot of people," said Groder.

But state police are standing by what was done.

"In this particular case they weren't licensed, and they knew they weren't and they knew they needed one," said Lt. David Bowler of the Maine State Police.

The money from the co-op's card game is currently being held as evidence while the investigation continues.

Groder now plans to hold a pot roast dinner to raise money for the co-op.

Must not be much crime in Buxton. Or...maybe it was just more lucrative to bust a few guys playing cards.

""In this particular case they weren't licensed,

In other words, they didn't ask permission from, and pay the requisite honorarium to the imperial State government.

Soon, you're going to need a license to ask for a license.

It’s clear and obvious that the Narragansett Pythian Sisters are trying to exercise their religion, and the law that requires a permit is in violation of the free exercise clause.

Besides, is it really gambling if you’re intentionally trying to lose so the money goes to charity?

When I blew up the pic to do the photoshop, they looked like Shark’s eyes - dead, glassy...I don’t think it was just the tough guy wannabe pose he was trying to strike, either...completely dead and lifeless....shocking...they really do look like the prototypical psychotics’ eyes...

That should have been the smart plan A from the start.

Wrong, the land and building belonged to the Pythian sisters, they had nothing to do with the woman running the games. The donated the building. Actual story: http://www.keepmecurrent.com/Community/story.cfm?storyID=66063

Those cops like easy, soft targets where they don’t need to worry about resistance from the “perps”.

After this arrest, they’ll probably go on to arrest seat belt violators and jaywalkers.

Riiiiight. If the state wanted to make sure it went to the charity, the $500 wouldn't have ended up in the coffers of the state police.

No, they can’t seize property for seatbelt and jaywalking offenses (yet).

They’ll stick with “crimes” where the targets are soft and they can seize property to fill state police bellies.

Or bring in SWAT to pull a wall down, flashbang the players, back an APC up into the room, and get everyone in custody before grandma can flush the toilet, using vague language to add the incident to their list required to justify DHS and other federal expenditures on $millions$ worth of local special operations equipment.

Now, now. Apparently you haven’t been paying attention. What about the little old ladies in Pennsylvania who had their pies confiscated at the church fish fry?

Gotta pay for state health inspectors, etc. We now have the safe food act. Can’t grow it, store it, transport it, cook it, sell it without gov approval. I think we can still eat it without a permit — not however without a tax.

The nonprofit co-op began in December of 2007 at the temple. Membership in the Pythian Sisters temple has dwindled in recent years, and the temple was in the process of transferring ownership of the building to the food co-op. Joann Groder, who founded the co-op, said Friday the co-op serves up to 200 people each week.

So far it seems the only thing the so called coop had done was have poker nights to pay the bills. The sisters and co-op are two different things.LOL
