Raw Video: George Tiller Murder Suspect in Custody

WICHITA, KAN - Nearly four hours after abortion doctor George Tiller was gunned down and killed in his Lutheran Church, Johnson County police pulled over a car matching the description of the suspect vehicle on I-35 near Gardner, Kan. The Associated Press reports police have the suspect in custody.

Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m., at Reformation Lutheran Church where he was a member of the congregation.

See a locator map of the crime.

According to Wichita media, police described the suspect as a white male in his 50's or 60's with gray hair that is balding in the middle. He is about 6'1" and about 220 pounds and was wearing a white shirt and dark pants. He was last seen in a light blue Ford Taurus, possibly an early 1990's model. It has a K-State vanity plate and a Kansas license plate number 225 BAB.

Members of the congregation who were inside at the time of the shooting were kept inside the church by police. Those arriving were ushered into the parking lot. Some witnesses were transported downtown to answer questions.

Tiller has been among the few U.S. physicians performing late-term abortions. His clinic has repeatedly been the site of protests for about two decades. In fact, Tiller has been the victim of violence multiple times.

On June 9, 1986, a homemade bomb was detonated on the roof of his Wichita clinic. No one was injured in that incident. Then in 1991, protesters blocked the entrance to his clinic until a federal judge ordered they be arrested. Two years later on Aug. 19, 1993, Dr. Tiller was shot outside his clinic. His wounds were not life threatening, and Shelly Shannon, an abortion opponent, was convicted and sentenced to prison.

Operation Rescue, a pro-life Christian activist organization that speaks out against Tiller and his practices, released the following statement on Sunday:

"We are shocked at this morning's disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down. Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller's family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ."

FOX 4 has a crew en route and is working to bring you more information on this developing story.

I hope Tiller repented his terrible sins before he died. And I hope his killer does too.

Help me with this. I am having difficulty. I think it is pretty much an understood fact around here that abortion is murder. No ifs ands or buts. The abortionist dismembers a living child of God and throws the carcass in the trash. The dead man said he was going to go to work tomorrow and mutilate an innocent child of God. He was stopped before he did what he promised he would do by the man with the gun. Is this actually a sin? Someone was going to die Monday morning by this man's hands. That child could possibly now have a chance. Probably not - but it is possible. I know a child who was saved 1 day before she was aborted when one of her 14 year old mother's friends told her grandmother what she was planning.

I don't even believe in the death penalty so it is very difficult to come to this conclusion. This was a preemptive act that possibly saved lives and I can see no other rational way of looking at it.

When does the Christian act directly against evil, and when does the Christian step back and let the hand of God take care of things?

Tough question....I do not want to presume at anytime to act under the hand of God but I do believe his vengeance is his to bestow...how he does it may or may not be through us and may or may not be something we agree with as a whole.

Did anyone take notice that his church is an ELCA church. For those of us who are Lutheran nothing else needs to be said about it...

ELCA - stay away. Any denomination that is a member of the National Council of Churches has been corrupted to one degree or another and should be avoided. There are good pastors and congregations, but the overall trend is to turn churches into radical leftist political organizations that maybe are allowed to have a slightly religious tinge to them.

see 41....

What if it was neither vengeance nor punishment but protection. The cops had been called, the courts had been petitioned, the congressmen had been voted for the peaceful protesters protested, the righteous prayed yet none of them would save the life of the child who was going to die on Monday morning by this man's hands. How can we condemn the man who possibly saved the life of a child?

This is nothing more than a statement of fact. I can't work up any sympathy for Tiller or the jackals that would have allowed him to go to "church" with them. If more "Christians" actively shamed murderers like this, perhaps abortion would be the capital crime that it always should have been.

Please, please let him be a Muslim.

Police have identified him as Scott Roeder. Apparently he has connections to Operation Rescue.

No Muslim. No environmentalist wacko.

"The description is a fat white guy in his 50's or 60's driving a 15 year old Taurus. How much more stereotypical do you want?"

How about "a fat, balding, white guy, wearing an NRA hat and T-shirt, and driving a pickup truck with a gun rack"??

It truly gives much to reflect on...I have typed a number of responses, and then deleted them...All I can say again is that it gives us much to reflect on. We are at the hand of God and I will not fully understand until I get to sit at his side.

It is remarkable that some of these people have faith and worship God. Whatever do they say in prayer? Maybe he believed he was doing the Lord’s work. Who was more whacked - the murderer who champions life then shoots the abortionist or the abortionist who kills 6 days a week and goes to pray to Jesus on Sunday? This irony is hard to manufacture.

In fact, Tiller has been the victim perpetrator of violence murder multiple thousands times.

No good editors left these days, I'm telling ya.

“I think Tiller went to Hell.”

That’s my guess too. But we’re not supposed to judge that particular issue.

It’s a terrible sin to save a babys life?

“Police have identified him as Scott Roeder. Apparently he has connections to Operation Rescue.”

That sucks. He has deeply damaged the pro-life movement.

“I don’t even believe in the death penalty so it is very difficult to come to this conclusion. This was a preemptive act that possibly saved lives.”

So is walking thru the Alvarado district in LA and gunning down every black or hispanic man standing on a street corner selling drugs. They are selling death to kids. Plus, a certain number of them will gun down other folks in the next month.

Doesn’t make it right.

By assassinating a man who is obeying the law? Yes.
