Dick Morris: What’s keeping Obama up?
The Hill ^ | 6/2/09 | Dick Morris

Posted on 06/02/2009 2:43:31 PM PDT by Jean S

The Rasmussen poll conducted over the weekend of May 30-31 asked a key question designed to give us perspective on Obama’s current popularity. The question was whether the current problems “are due to the recession that began under the Bush administration or to the policies Obama has put in place since taking office.” In other words, who’s to blame, Bush or Obama? As long as this opinion remains prevalent, Obama will continue to enjoy high popularity. But when it changes, as it inevitably must, we will see him begin a long, long fall.

And this is the key measurement to watch.

The real recession — dating from the stock market collapse — began four months before Bush left office. And it is now four months since Obama was inaugurated. From this vantage, it still looks to voters like Bush’s recession.

But it will become increasingly obvious that the large deficit Obama has incurred while pursuing his cure for the recession is, on its own, causing more problems than it solves. As high interest rates and, most likely, inflation, begin to set in — with no relief in unemployment — it will be obvious that Obamanomics isn’t working and is, in fact, aggravating the economic trouble.

Obama, recognizing the danger, has recently begun to speak out — without even cracking a guilty smile — against the huge budget deficit he created. He is trying to blame the deficit, too, on Bush. But voters will not overlook the huge spending sprees of January and February, when Obama quadrupled the 2009 deficit. They will come to see that spending as a huge mistake and will shift their blame to the new president who proposed it.

Obama now faces a choice of poisons.

He can leave taxes as they are and take the poison of high interest rates, rapid inflation and a new recession, all caused by the massive borrowing he has forced on the Treasury. If the Treasury cannot sell enough bonds at a reasonable interest rate, it will, of course “monetize the deficit” — economics-speak for printing money so that there will be enough to buy the Treasury debt at moderate interest rates. But the process of so vastly expanding the money supply (or even just leaving the current expansion in place without trying to soak up the extra money) will cause its own runaway inflation.

Or Obama can break his pledge and raise taxes on everybody. His soak-the-rich approach will not be enough to cover the deficit. Especially when one factors in his healthcare proposals, big tax increases on the middle class become an increasing likelihood. And when we consider his cap-and-trade legislation, huge increases in utility rates also loom.

Either poison will make it clear that the economy is suffering from the medicine Obama administered, rather than the original disease that started under Bush.

And, of course, while we cannot predict precisely the start date of the Obama-generated misery, it’s pretty clear that it will be a long-lasting pain. Neither inflation nor the pain of higher taxes is going to go away soon. And either approach will probably kindle a new recession.

Some economists think we will have an L-shaped recession from which we do not emerge for years and years. Others think it will be a W-shaped recession (not Bush’s W) in which we emerge briefly and then go back down again. But a U-shaped recession, in which we go down and then come bouncing back, probably cannot happen with Obama’s deficits now firmly in place. Then it will become clear that the cure was worse than the disease.

Obama has it all figured out. anythign bad that happens he’ll blame someone else and the morons who voted for him and who get polled will believe him. Thus, I don’t buy into Toe Sucker’s premise that Obama’s polls will fall and not anytime soon. If there is a time where this will happen, I’d say sometime in 2011. These dems will do anything to maintain power.

Problem with this is, the recession that "started under Bush" was precipitated by the issues in the housing markets, which was started under Dodd and Frank.

This story will never get told.

My understanding is that if you took two of every three dollars from every earner in the US for the next 11 years that would just pay off Obamas deficits.

That does not include the annual operating budgets. Only the combined deficits.

Our one hope is to flip the Congress in 2010, before the complete stimulus has been spent. That is provided health care and cap-and-trade are defeated this year.

Otherwise America as we know it is gone for good.

I think that Dick is brilliant sometimes, but strikes out a lot. Sort of like a .250 hitter in baseball who hits for power.

Unfortunately, .250 is a mediocre figure for a political prognosticator. However, Dick keeps swinging for the fences.

He will wait for the economy to begin to recover and then he will propose a VAT. It will start modest, a few percent, and he'll say it is necessary to rein in the deficits that the populist right has been rope-a-doped into screaming about for six months already. Then he'll run for re-election with the rate still low, and ramp it up enough to really pay for this boondoggles after.

The plan is transparent, there are no "ifs" involved.

Obama is being supported by:
  1. a media that is little more than a Ministry of Propaganda
  2. Bush hate that causes people to think that things were so much worse under Bush despite reality
  3. The guano caused by Obama's policies has not yet hit the fan
Sadly the American people will have to be convinced of Obama's destruction of the country by actually experiencing the results first hand.

Most voters were influenced by the MSM "we're in a recession" hype long before it truly set it. I'd submit that we may never have gone into recession without this shove.

Cultists rarely change their stripes. Hussein worship will continue unabated in the LameStream Media...and the “popular” opinion of Hussein, though exaggerated, will continue.

Add to that the FACT of massive voter intimidation and fraud by ACORN and related Democrat group plus a group of weak kneed opposition and compliant Republicans, and the conclusion is obvious: we will see a permanent sea change in the power structure of the federal government.

Socialism is here. Hugo Chavez is reborn in America under the guise of Hope and Change.

Prosperity? Nope. Not gonna happen. Not for a long long while.

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I will fight it tooth and nail, and I certainly hope my analysis is wrong. I pray for this nation’s spiritual renewal and for the American people come to their senses. I know Obama voters who disagree with what he is doing, but aren’t angry enough about it to “stand athwart history yelling STOP!”

So the incremental destruction of liberty continues.

State Run Media is keeping Obama propped up.

The Washinton Post = Tass
The NY Times = Pravda

A two class system is being put in place. The wealthy Obama donors will be the new Communist Party Apparachniks. And each middleclass family who is forced to sell their retirement plans so they can live will join the poor as the Proletariat.

Once this transformation is complete, the new ObamaCorps national police force will be created to protect the people. And then they will outlaw the second amendment and come for the guns.

I give it 7-12 years until that knock comes to my door.

What keeps Oboma up is what keeps any leftist in power.

Their constituents have a “hard on” for him and they can’t think beyond the amorous feeling that results.

That is the best reason I can come up with because using logic just doesn’t work.

I am no economics genious but, it is real obvious that you can’t keep putting everything on the Credit Card. Obama is doing it worse than all the other Presidents but, we’ve had functional problems in the economy since the 70’s. That is when our entire manufacturing base began moving to other countries. We’ve had no answer to that, ever.

I want to create an environment where a manufacturing base can be rebuilt which is why I’m always for less taxes and less spending. That message has just never ever resonated.

Mostly I’m convinced it’s too late to do anything. Ronald Reagan tried but, there were even too many lefties for him in his day. Now it’s impossible. two thirds of the country have been raised to hate the country and capitalism. It gives them an energy rush when Obama apologizesto the world at every turn.

Add to that the mess in the west. California is close to being a third world country.

Washington has no freakin’ clue what to do about anything. They are just in the blame game.

And, the Chinese are just waiting for the right moment to tell us to shove it by not supporting our bonds anymore.

This is not rocket science!! This is our future by any logical calculation or thoughtful projection.

But one issue remains. Maybe it started under a different president, one and a half years after the opposition took the majority in congress I might add, but what, pray tell, is the fundamental change in direction between the end of the old and the beginning of the new? It is not a change in direction but a change of intensity.

Bush started the whole TARP and stimulus thing after years of big spending. Obama just ratcheted it up to warp 10. Supposedly the crash was due to “deregulation.” Accusing the President who signed SOX into law of deregulating the financial sector is laughable. And if deregulation was to blame then what deregulated laws have been re-regulated to fix anything? Bottom line, this is the Bush-Obama recession.

Conservatives need to frequently point that out. What could save the country would be a return to power in 2010 and then push through some commonsense voter rules. Mandate that each state register voters using what ever rules and methods they use when guns are sold. They are both constitutional rights, and voting wrong is the more dangerous of the two. Don't the news boys always go on and on about how easy it is to buy guns? They'd have to do a quick 180 to claim otherwise. Hey, even let the BAT boys go and scrutinize the registration forms.

who’s to blame, Bush or Obama?

I'll tell you who is to blame. It's the career politicians ... Republican and Democrat ... Kennedy, Byrd, Specter, Biden, Murtha, Reid, Kerry, Lindsey, Frank, etc. , etc. ALL OF THEM , who have placed the importance of re-election above the good of the country. The federal government is corrupt and BROKEN ! To argue whether it's Obama's fault or Bush's fault is laughable. The fault lies with the character of the politicians we elect and re-elect .... and with the character of us, the electorate, as well.

Fake polls? Questions asked of illegal aliens instead of American citizens and legal residents? Questions asked in the middle of blue states and cities? Lots of reasons his poll numbers are up. Doesn’t mean any of them are legitimate. BJs poll numbers were always around 60% but he never got more than 48% on either election. The only reason Bozo won the election, other than the gross stupidity of the McCain campaign, was voter fraud.
