Homegrown Terror Suspects Turned Toward Radicalism in U.S. Prisons
FOX News ^ | May 22, 2009 | By Joseph Abrams

The four men charged with plotting to blow up two New York synagogues and shoot down military planes converted to Islam while behind bars, a place terror experts say is a cauldron for Islamic radicalism.

James Cromitie, David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen were said by friends and family to have become Muslims while in prison, where they began on a path toward terrorist violence that law enforcement officials say is part of a troubling trend in America.

"Prisons can play a critical role in both triggering and reinforcing the radicalization process," read a landmark 2007 report from the New York Police Department, which warned of prisons as a "radicalizing cauldron."

"The prison's isolated environment, ability to create a 'captive audience' atmosphere, its absence of day-to-day distractions, and its large population of disaffected young men, makes it an excellent breeding ground for radicalization."

Many inmates convert to Islam while incarcerated, but security experts have signaled an emerging threat from those who embrace "Prison Islam," which they say is a twisted version of the religion.

Prison Islam is "the convergence of prison culture and violence into religious practice," said Frank Cilluffo, director of the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University. Often lacking an imam or other religious leader to instruct them, inmates will distort Islam for themselves to embrace prison values like violence and gang loyalty.

And while religious conversion is rehabilitative for the vast majority of inmates, Cilluffo said, Prison Islam can lead them down a much more dangerous path. Charismatic leaders can recruit prisoners to their cause and further swell the ranks of the radicals.

Between 6 and 10 percent of the U.S. prison population practices some form of Islam...

"These radicalized inmates either feel discriminated against in the United States or feel that the United States oppresses minorities and Muslims overseas,"

Ask Obama who Khalid al-Mansour is. We have a president tutored by such radicals.

They may want to get to the Quaker model of prisons. One cell. One man. One cot. One Bible.

Obama’s likely plan of action: more Muslim prison chaplains.

3 squares and a cot with unlimited recruiting potential curtesy of the American tax payer. We must be like the energizer bunny with the ability to keep paying, and paying and paying...

Mohammed was a bandit and caravan robber. He lived by violence. He founded a violent cult. It’s not in the least surprising that the thug element is attracted to it.

What other religion tells you it’s cool to kill anybody outside of the cult (and a lot of people within it if you don’t like them) that you’re allowed to take everything away from people who aren’t in your cult, that you can have all the women you want and get rid of them simply by pointing them out the door...heck, it’s a thug’s dream.

Now that Bambi is telling people that the US is one of the world’s largest “Muslim nations,” I guess we’d better get used to it. He makes me sick.

Maybe so but there's already been an existing problem created by prison imams who are accredited with the full knowledge and approval of government officials:

The Democrats' 'Soft' Jihadist

On Sunday, Democratic delegates convening in Denver were prayed over by representatives of various faiths. One stood out: Ingrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of North America. With this choice, Barak Obama's campaign has committed a strategic error of the first order.

After all, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) has been identified by the Department of Justice not only as a front for the Muslim Brotherhood – a global Islamist movement with the stated mission in America of "destroying Western civilization from within." Worse yet, it has also been named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the United States' largest alleged terrorism financing conspiracy.

...Like other Brotherhood operations, ISNA's purpose is to promote what might be called "soft jihad" – the task of steadily insinuating the brutally repressive and subversive program the Islamists call Shariah through da'wa, proselytizing and social networking.

The more one learns about Dr. Mattson and her organization, the more questions will be raised about Barak Obama's judgment and that of his party in affording them a prominent role in the 2008 Democratic convention. For example:

Ingrid Mattson is director of the Macdonald Center for the Study of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at the Hartford Seminary in Connecticut . Her program is used to credential Muslim chaplains for U.S. prisons and our military. (The armed forces require its chaplain candidates to take 72 credit hours from Dr. Mattson's program.) This credentialing was previously performed by organizations founded by Abdurahman Alamoudi, once among the most prominent Muslim Brotherhood operatives in America. Today, Alamoudi is serving a 23-year prison sentence for his involvement in terrorism-related crimes....

while “cauldron for Islamic radicalism “ and “radicalizing cauldron” are absolutely what today’s prisons are....”Islamic recruiting centers” is perhaps more ‘factual’,and cogent. We are in the process of assisting the recruiting efforts of our enemies. The only thing they don’t have when they walk out of prison is a weapon. Time to slam the doors on prison Imams. just say’n.

...and here we thought he was tutored by that sweet old man, Rev. Wright....what's the difference between BLT and Islam, again?

I like that model.

And I also like the Sheriff Joe Arpaio model: chain-gangs / hard labor in triple-digit temps, pink underwear (which they can wear on their heads in the summer for shade), and 90 cents of food per inmate per day.

“become Muslims while in prison, where they began on a path toward terrorist” ................................. Bull Crap!! Their conversion is nothing more than them striking back at a society that put them there, its a revenge thing for most of them, I’m sure.

This just goes to show that the prisons need to start watching these Muslim chaplains and what they are teaching.

Actually we should go back to the prison model used by some states a century or so ago, in which the prison was a self-sufficient community. In at least one that I’ve read about there was a coal mine on the grounds, and if the prisoners wanted any heat, they had to mine the coal. They also grew all their own food. Much better deal for both the prisoners and the taxpayers, and naturally the chief obstacle to returning to this model is . . . the unions, whose members currently staff our prisons and look the other way while radical Muslim recruiting activities go on.
