ABC News' Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller report: The other day we heard a comment from a White House aide that never would have been uttered during the primaries or general election campaign.
During a conference call in preparation for President Obama's trip to Cairo, Egypt, where he will address the Muslim world, deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications Denis McDonough said "the President himself experienced Islam on three continents before he was able to -- or before he's been able to visit, really, the heart of the Islamic world -- you know, growing up in Indonesia, having a Muslim father -- obviously Muslim Americans (are) a key part of Illinois and Chicago."
Given widespread unease and prejudice against Muslims among Americans, especially in the wake of 9/11, the Obama campaign was perhaps understandably very sensitive during the primaries and general election to downplay the candidate's Muslim roots.

Obama/Axelrod ran a smart campaign in which they baited talkradio enemies into making ad hominem attacks against Obama that turned swing voters into Obama voters for fear of being called racist/mean-spirited.
In the past 40 years there are always more swing voters who don’t want to be called mean spirited than those who would swing in favor of a Republican based on an ad hominem attack.
Reagan fans just don’t understand the 11th commandment. Ad hominem just does not work for us.
I believe that Barry O’Bamagh wrote a New York Times Bestseller about his Muslim roots with the title: “Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.”
Pictured on the cover of that book is Habiba Akumu Hussein and Barack Obama, Senior, Barry’s paternal grandmother and his father as a young boy.

I think so - when Barry made that gaffe about visiting 57 states someone or other brought out there are 57 muslim states - slip of Barry’s tongue ....(lower case ‘m’ on purpose)

The member states are tabulated in three columns of 19 rows, 3x19=57.
