[Vanity] VA 'Stress' Questions
Personal Email | 6/2/2009 | Self

Posted on 06/02/2009 7:18:19 PM PDT by SES1066

"I had a doctor's appointment at the local VA clinic yesterday and found something very interesting I would like to pass along.. While going through triage before seeing the doctor, I was asked at the end of the exam, three questions.

1.) Did I feel stressed?
2.) Did I feel threatened?
3.) Did I feel like doing harm to someone?

The nurse then informed me, if I had answered yes to any of the questions, I would have lost my concealed carry permit as it would have gone into my medical records and the VA would have reported it to Homeland Security.

TOPICS: Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS: harm; stress; threat; va
I very seldom make 'Vanity' Posts but I have gotten this from a couple of sources and confirmed by an out patient at a Florida VA Clinic. I can understand caution BUT unless ALL individuals are asked this question at any routine physician visit - is this not eerily similar to the recent Homeland Security warning circular about Veterans?

Unfortunately I think HIPPA goes out the window if you are a danger to yourself or others.

That's the first thing that popped into my mind after reading this.

It is truly "on", friends.

Try being a head injury pt. I am NOT allowed to own a firearm at all! The powers at be are afraid that I would go “postal” on someone or group, [ie like the va for taking their time processing my disability claim(s)] My name has also put on the domestic terror watch list too, after getting angry at the va regional office in Det. and yelled at a va clerk to get off of his a$$ and get to work. While being escorted out I said something about turning the building into a smoldering crater! Those people have no sense of houmor...

This is an email you’ve gotten from a couple of people and they say this is what has happened to them lately at the VA? That’s what I got from your post. Hmmm.

In my experience with the VA and Army (because my husband was recently medically retired due to combat wounds, brain injury, PTSD, amongst other things and now he’s in teh VA system), these are normal questions they ask at intake, especially for psych type appointments. However, I’ve never heard that a yes to any of them will result in the loss of a concealed carry permit.

If and I use the word if, because I know how the email things usually pan out, this is true...not good. It will cause a lot of problems...vets who really need help won’t go get it and those with problems who admit it, will forever be chastised and labeled as mentally defective, when some of them have experienced some serious trauma or witnessed it.

I’m not sure about all three of those questions, but there is a new federal mandate that requires doctors/nurses to ask all patients whether they feel threatened (it’s driven by domenstic abuse concerns). It looks the the VA expanded those questions for the Vets. Nanny State is here.

One more thing - they’re also supposed to ask you about your pain level...

"Those people have no sense of houmor..."

I think they have to have something removed if they accept the job.

One presumes you have never had any dealings with the VA (lucky you) because they DO ask questions like this... and with all these new laws, the information IS transferred to folks who determine whether or not you get government permission to exercise a basic human right. But from your whitehouse basement office, I’m sure you can see the Secret Service so YOU’RE protected.

I'm a retiree using Tricare, and I've been asked those questions for years, every time a visit the clinic for a checkup.

Gary Sinise has been doing radio commercials lately, urging veterans to seek help from the VA if they have PTSD. If I had PTSD I'd be hesitant to seek help, with all the talk about taking away their RKBA.

Well, from these replies, it looks like it may be a 'suggested' question asked on an ad hoc basis. I do understand that there are 'stressed' people and some may be in the VA System. I also know that even a single incident can ruin a whole lot of people and 'tar' a business/institution.

I guess what worries me would be a knee-jerk reaction to a single response that produces a cascading series of onerous responses. Any one of us can think of scenarios off the top of our heads that would be perfectly rational, logical and NOT MAKE US DANGEROUS to the point of losing our civil rights!

Thanks for all of the responses.

In my state, one of the questions on the CCW application asks whether or not you've ever been diagnosed with mental illness. However, the state does not define exactly what "mental illness" is. Does it mean mean "hospitalized or institutionalized for mental illness"?. Or, could it mean "have you ever used anti-depressants?" Or, could it mean "have you ever sought counseling?" Or, could it mean "have you ever been accused of domestic disturbance?"

They don't want to define it.

In Maine, the permit was very cut and dried when I obtained one in the late 80's. If you'd never been institutionalized, had a clean rap sheet, you got your permit, and it was illegal for the LEO to ask you why you wanted it.

If you would simply do a search you will see it is posted all over the place. But their is no original experience factor. It is always the straw man statement, a friend said a friend of his said, are some such garbage. Some people should not be allowed to own guns anyway. And someone has to make that determination.
