"Brotherhood" Invited To Obama Speech By U.S.
The Alantic ^ | 06/03/09 | Marc Ambinder

Posted on 06/03/2009 1:58:44 PM PDT by markedmannerf

A sign that the Obama administration is willing to publicly challenge Egypt's commitment to parliamentary democracy: various Middle Eastern news sources report that the administration insisted that at least 10 members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's chief opposition party, be allowed to attend his speech in Cairo on Thursday. The brotherhood is a Salafist/ Islamist party with branches in many countries, and it does not have a reputation for liberalism and has supported violent campaigns against Israel (and Egypt's own government). It has deep roots in the region and traces its intellectual lineage to Sayyid Qutb, a top American-educated Islamic intellectual who was executed -- or martyred -- by the Egyptian government in 1966. The Brotherhood has direct links with Sunni groups like Hamas in the Palestinian territories. Its standing in Egypt has suffered as of late because of a crackdown by the Egyptian government and a growing frustration that it is too conservative (anti-women's rights, the whole gamut) for a modern Middle East. Still, it's the largest Sunni opposition party in the world, and it's clear that the Obama administration wants to engage the Sunnis -- even the less moderate Sunnis -- in his "Mutual Respect" tour. Hoping to tamp down criticism that by speaking in Egypt, Obama is giving legitimacy to Hosni Mubarak's quasi-dictatorship, the administration also invited leading human rights activists to the speech.

No it’s good that Osama and Zawahiri’s buds get close to Obama.
Give them front row seats. And private meetings later.

See how it goes.

Well, isn’t that just special... IIRC isn’t the Muslim Brotherhood the “mothership” for ALL the radical Islamic Militant Jihadist Groups???

They’d better have translators for the American audience. Part of me is expecting the entire speech to be in Arabic...

In an interview with Laura Haim on Canal Plus, a French television station, Mr. Obama noted that the United States also could be considered as "one of the largest Muslim countries in the world." He sought to downplay the expectations of the speech, but he said he hoped the address would raise awareness about Muslims.

Are there any freepers who speak this language who can translate and compare to the official government version?

More information on the Muslim Brotherhood from -- Discover the Networks - lots of info. and extra articles... This should give you an idea of what his inviting them means.

DISCOVER THE NETWORKS -- THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD

One more comment on this: It was also noted in a TV broadcast this morning (one of the big three) that Muslims will be paying "special attention to his exact words" citing interviewed Egyptian citizens. We should as well -- if you don't understand something why he phrases things in a certain way, don't attribute it to stupidity or "nerves". Obama is a Muslim through and through. By their fruits ye shall know them -- Obama is NOT CHRISTIAN by any stretch of the imagination...

Where does Obama get off INSISTING that 10 members of the Muslim Brotherhood be given tickets to his speech? And why is Egypt complying? Wouldn’t that be similar to a foreign head of state coming here and insisting that 10 members of the KKK be given tickets to attend his speech (yeah, I know that analogy is a bit extreme, but you get the idea).

More on the connection between Hamas & the Muslim Brotherhood from the U.S. Dept. of State...

http://www.state.gov/s/ct/rls/crt/2007/103714.htm
The Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS)
a.k.a. Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya; Izz al-Din al Qassam Battalions; Izz al-Din al Qassam Brigades; Students of Ayyash; Student of the Engineer; Yahya Ayyash Units ; Izz al-Din al-Qassim Brigades; Izz al-Din al-Qassim Forces; Izz al-Din al-Qassim Battalions; Izz al-Din al Qassam Forces

Description: HAMAS, which includes military and political wings, was formed at the onset of the first Palestinian uprising or Intifada in late 1987, as an outgrowth of the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. The armed element, called the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, conducts anti-Israeli attacks, including suicide bombings against civilian targets inside Israel. HAMAS also manages a broad, mostly Gaza-based network of “Dawa” or ministry activities that include charities, schools, clinics, youth camps, fund-raising, and political activities. A Shura council based in Damascus, Syria, sets overall policy. After winning Palestinian Legislative Council elections in January 2006, HAMAS took control of significant Palestinian Authority (PA) ministries, including the Ministry of Interior. HAMAS subsequently formed an expanded, overt militia called the Executive Force, subordinate to the Ministry. This force and other HAMAS cadres took control of Gaza in a military-style coup in June 2007, forcing Fatah forces to either leave Gaza or go underground there.

Activities: Prior to 2005, HAMAS conducted numerous anti-Israeli attacks, including suicide bombings, rocket launches, improvised explosive device (IED) attacks, and shootings. HAMAS, however, has not directly targeted U.S. interests, although the group makes little or no effort to avoid soft targets frequented by foreigners. The group curtailed terrorist attacks in February 2005, after agreeing to a temporary period of calm brokered by the PA, and ceased most violence after winning control of the PA legislature and cabinet in January 2006. After HAMAS staged a June 2006 attack on IDF soldiers near Kerem Shalom that resulted in two deaths and the abduction of Corporal Gilad Shalit, Israel took steps that severely limited the operation of the Rafah crossing. HAMAS maintained and expanded its military capabilities in 2007. In June 2007, HAMAS took control of Gaza from the PA and Fatah in a military-style coup, leading to an international boycott and closure of Gaza borders. HAMAS has since dedicated the majority of its activity in Gaza to solidifying its control, hardening its defenses, tightening security, and conducting limited operations against Israeli military forces.

HAMAS fired rockets from Gaza into Israel in 2007 but focused more mortar on attacks targeting Israeli incursions. Additionally, other terrorist groups in Gaza fired rockets into Israel, most, presumably, with HAMAS support or acquiescence. HAMAS internal security efforts have centered on confronting threats to the group’s hold on power, including arrest operations against Fatah. In June 2007, HAMAS took control of Gaza, leading to a drawn-out struggle between HAMAS and supporters of Fatah. The majority of HAMAS activity in Gaza is directed at solidifying their control over Gaza and weakening Fatah through kidnappings, torture, and the use of the “Executive Force” as a de-facto security apparatus. The continued international boycott and perceived efforts to destroy HAMAS have increased anti-U.S. sentiment on the Palestinian street, a development that could lead cells affiliated with HAMAS to launch attacks, including suicide bombings, without the sanction of HAMAS’ senior leadership.

Strength: HAMAS probably has several hundred operatives in its armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, along with its reported 9,000-man Executive Force and tens of thousands of supporters and sympathizers.

Location/Area of Operation: HAMAS has an operational presence in every major city in the Palestinian territories and currently focuses its anti-Israeli attacks on targets in the West Bank and within Israel. HAMAS could potentially activate operations in Lebanon or resume terrorist operations in Israel. The group retains a cadre of leaders and facilitators that conducts diplomatic, fundraising, and arms smuggling activities in Lebanon, Syria, and other states. HAMAS is also increasing its presence in the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, probably with the goal of eclipsing Fatah’s long-time dominance of the camps.

External Aid: HAMAS receives some funding, weapons, and training from Iran. In addition, fundraising takes place in the Gulf countries, but the group also receives donations from Palestinian expatriates around the world and private benefactors in Arab states. Some fundraising and propaganda activity takes place in Western Europe and North America.

I’m not sure if people realize that the Muslim Brotherhood is what spawned Osama bin Laden. I want people to realize that the Muslim Brotherhood is not confined to Egypt and Palestine either. There are branches in all parts of the Middle East, Africa (including the Sudan, and Somalia), Indonesia, even the US has groups with ties to the MB.

The Muslim Brotherhood preaches Jihad as OBLIGATORY, and claims that hatred of all non-Muslims will bring them closer to Allah.

It should also be noted that in all parts of the world the Muslim Brotherhood have “spawned” not only Al-Qaeda, and Hamas, but there are numerous jihadist groups that have “splintered” from the Muslim Brotherhood, but the jihadist groups themselves still claim they are part of the whole.

Simply INVITING members of the MB is a HUGE statement, especially after his words in France yesterday saying that the US is a Muslim nation... Expect his speech to include plenty of code-speak, and expect his press secretary Gibbels to say he “mis-spoke”.

I really wish I knew Arabic so that we could see how the White House chooses to translate it, vs. what we are hearing in English.

Jveritas & FARS, I think both of you are fluent in Arabic, right? I think it would be a good idea if either one of you, or perhaps another FReeper who has time, and knowledge of Arabic should examine the speech as translated into Arabic, and of course, sharing your insight as to how it is “heard” in the Muslim world would be very valuable I think as well... I just immediately thought of the both of you as people who may be interested in doing this, and have the requisite skills, IIRC! :)
