WASHINGTON (AFP) Republican Senator John McCain on Wednesday joined his former rival President Barack Obama in calling for a nuclear-free world, a goal previously formulated by former president Ronald Reagan.
During a lengthy speech on the Senate floor marking the unveiling of a statue of Reagan in the Capitol, the veteran Arizona lawmaker recalled how his "personal hero" had dreamed of a world free of nuclear weapons.
"That is my dream too," McCain said.
"This is a distant and difficult goal. And we must proceed toward it prudently and pragmatically, and with a focused concern for our security and the security of allies who depend on us."
. . . . .
Obama welcomed McCain's comments.
"I have outlined an ambitious strategy for promoting arms control and preventing nuclear terrorism and proliferation, which is already bearing fruit," the president said in statement.
"I look forward to working with Senator McCain and the entire Congress to ensure that we accomplish these goals together for the American people and the security of the entire planet."

I thought his dream was to find where he left his teeth?
Before or after finding who stole his strawberries?
The difference is that when it comes to disarming, Reagan would look at the rest of the world and say “You go first”.
I, too, have a dream. It’s a dream that John McCain will dry up and blow away....
And impossible this side of glory. Whatever kumbaya gobbledygook is in Obama’s mind, McCain at least makes a sustained showing of care about the tenets of distinct Christian faith. He should know better than to suggest this is a man-sized task.
are these guys that naive or just stupid
Senility and stupidity join forces.
Not a place I want to go again.
... like a tumbleweed in the desert. I share that dream.
Followed by McCain saying: "In fact, whatever Obama says he wants, that's what I want, too. Whatever my Democrat puppet-masters tell me I want, that's what I want. Really."
I’m fine with nuclear free weapon world, with starwar defence system in place. As a compromise we should increase substantially nuclear power stations
Sure. He ought to take a good look at what’s happening between Israel and Iran right about now. What a doddering old fool.
Nuclear free world? What a fool.
Funny you should post that Picture I was going to use a Unicorn analogy in my last comment but decided not to.:)
And I dream of winning $300,000,000.00 in the lottery. I think my chances are much better.
Nothing wrong with wanting a nuclear free world - big problem with doing this unilaterally and without any way to make sure other nations also disarm their nukes.
The Cylons will always have nukes
There is NO WAY that Russia and China will reduce their nuclear stockpiles. Obama doesn’t get it.
McBama barf...omg, I am ill.
Oh no - Obamasiah gets it all too well. He wants the U.S. to be weak
Just let ME out of this dream, please.
You know what the BORG says....ESCAPE IS FUTILE, “YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED”
OMDB Locked and loaded.
Just wonderful...their dream is our nightmare! Peace through strength...a no-nukes world is fantasy until the true messiah returns.
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far
To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause
And I know if I’ll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest
And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star
McCain is even nuttier than I first thought. I don’t even think Ron Paul wants to give up our nukes.
Do you know how many missiles Reagan eliminated? And, he wanted to get rid of them all. Read “Ronald Reagan and his quest to abolish nuclear weapons.” Why do you think we went into Iraq?
Nonproliferation, and Anti-Balistic Missile defense are the only legitimate and rational approach to nuclear weapons.
The problem today is that you are increasingly dealing with regimes and transnational terrorist organizations that will not hesitate to use them( IE, Iran).
I’ve no problem with eliminating as many of them as possible so long as it is not unilateral in the face of the above stated threats.
The same politicians have also cut SDI.
The only thing wrong with wanting a nuclear free world is being nai'ive enough to think it's possible.
There is no way to prevent any country from rebuilding their nuclear weapons once yours are gone UNLESS you have the will to invade and stop any country at any time that is detected starting to build them.
Say it's 2050. All nuclear weapons in the world are gone. Then, one day, a large country starts to menace a small country. The small country converts its nuclear materials from peaceful use into weapons.
What, pray tell, is either the larger country, or the world in general, going to do against a small country armed with nuclear weapons? The same thing that Japan did against the U.S.. Namely, they'll lose cities until they decide to surrender.
No, I don't forsee most nations giving up their nuclear weapons. If anything, they will continue to proliferate faster and faster. It's human nature. All the soaring rhetoric and wide eyed idealism in the world is swept aside by the law of the jungle.
Nuclear disarmament is unenforceable globally without the will and the ability to incinerate anyone who dares violate the rules. No will and no ability equals no end of nukes.
Sometimes, there's just no turning back.
Wasn’t claiming that it is possible to have a nuclear free world. Just that expressing a desire to have one is not the issue.
“McCain ... also urged a tougher stance toward US foes Iran and North Korea.
“This requires a tough and tough-minded approach to both Iran and North Korea, both of whom have gotten away with too much for far too long,” he said”
ALSO — why is this in FrontPage news, when it’s near a year old, from June 3, 2009?!
Politicians should be realists with grownup policy positions. It makes no difference that a desire for a nuclear-free world is good as long that desire can never be realistically obtained. For supposedly serious politicians to spout fantasies and be taken seriously is the mark of something seriously wrong with the political system.
Obama really is a Trojan horse. Goodbye America.
John McCain’s “dreams” are conservatives’ nightmares.
PLEASE go away, Senator. Go FAR away!
Soros two puppets speak.
JD needs to tie MCStain with being Obama’s lap dog cause McCain his toy poddle.
“are these guys that naive or just stupid”
They both work for Soros. Have you been incapable of figuring that one out?
Two idiots, no waiting.
...there is fresh blood on my desk from all the pounding of my head against it.
John McCain, I want you to STFU. You’ve done enough damage. Please keep your pie-hole shut, nobody is interested in your opinions anymore.
I am patiently awaiting the day when the announcement is made that John McQueeg is DEAD... And this will be my response:
