Anyone who rides a bike anywhere in the city would have to register it with the City of Ithaca or face a $10 fine, based on a law being considered tonight by Common Council.
The law would apply not just to city residents, but to anyone who rides in the city, including visitors
The purpose of the new law is to support and encourage bicycle riding, to assist in documenting bikes for planning purposes, to disseminate information to bike riders, and to facilitate the return of lost or stolen bikes, according to the Common Council's resolution.
Only a group of liberals could think that forcing people to register or face a fine encourages anything.
Anywhere that liberals rule, fascism follows
ping
Charging $10 bucks is sure gonna help that goal.
The Onion and Scrappleface sure have their work cut out for them.
That anyone would think that requiring registration of a bike would encourage people to ride more.....
Truly liberalism is a mental disease.
Fascism is the remedy to rule by committee.
Talk about backwards.
whatever happened to Liberal Bass Turds?
What about people who are bike touring through the city?
Or visiting?
What are they going to do? Have bike checkpoints now just like the car ones?
Do they really want to tie up their police department with that kind of needless busywork?
I grew up in Toledo, Ohio and we registered our bicycles in the 50’s. HOWEVER, it was voluntary for the purpose of recovery if stolen. I even had a license plate.
"Registration" is never about bikes, or boats, or guns, or cars.
What gets registered is people. So that liberals and other fascists can control people.
The purpose of the law is to make money for the city.
Ithaca may be Gorges, but the politics are danged fugly.
10$ this year, but next year, because of the evil Republicans, they’ll have to raise the fee to 20$...then it will go to 100$.
“It’s only 8$ a month to ride your bike, who can complain about that??”
The American Public GETS WHAT IT DESERVES, ALWAYS!!
A long winded way of saying "The purpose of the new law is to tax bikes" -- after they've already been sales taxed, of course.
These people are beyond belief. Ithica’s like a Bermuda triangle of intelligence.
I guess all of that heavy breathing as you pedal uphill puts too much CO2 in the air
LOL!
The police department already hosts a voluntary bicycle registration, Ithaca Police Chief Ed Vallely said. But they recover so many bikes, they have one entire garage dedicated to housing them, and they hold a yearly auction to get rid of the bikes that are never claimed.
Democrats never let facts or reality prevent them from imposing their stupidity upon the people.
“What gets registered is people. So that liberals and other fascists can control people. “
Excellent point. That’s what “liberalism” (fascism with a smiley face) is all about.
If it has wheels, rolls or moves and has a potential for people to have fun with or on, it needs to be licensed and regulated, for our own good of course.
The new fad these days, is to make people wear helmets if they can fall off something they are having fun on. soon there will need to be helmet licences, because they make recognition dificult, so they will need to have an identification number on them.
So lost helmets can be returned, of course....
My hometown also had registration which was supposed to aid in recovery of stolen bicycles. My bicycle was stolen ane we periodically checked with police to see if had been recovered and we were told no. My dad finally insisted on looking at the recovered bicycles. My bike was there complete with registration tag. (Unclaimed bikes were auctioned off and the proceeds went to the PBA)
Governments see things like this as more important than preventing real crime. Control is all.
LOL!
BUMP!
Look for ‘The People’s Republik of Madistan’ to follow suit.
I LOVE my bike, but only ride it on the bike trails and on my own land with the dogs chasing behind.
I can’t believe bicyclists aren’t injured or killed around here on a daily basis between the way they DISOBEY all road rules, and ride down the middle of all of our country roads while training for The Ironman Race. *Rolleyes*
Nearly hit one on my way to work the other day. She was right in the middle of the road, on the other side of the crest of a hill. *SCREEEEEEEEEEEECH*
Dumb@ss.
Fortunately mine was never stolen. My point was that bike registration isn’t something new. Well, forced registration is. In Toledo kids actually got their bikes back if the registration number hadn’t been defaced.
Hey! That's a real concern! All those fitness freaks are adding billions of tons of CO2 to the air each year, and causing "gore bull warming". They should have to pay a carbon fitness tax to stop this "gorebull warming".
The average couch potato is the least CO2 producing type of human, producing about 1/2 ton of CO2 per year. The fitness freak, marathon runner, cyclist etc. produces 10 times that much, about 5 tons min. CO2 per year!
The purpose of the new law is... to confiscate more money for the government
And hire another relative to work in a liberal's little personal branch of the great liberal government empire.
LOL! Yep. That’s the one that nearly became my ‘Hood Ornament’ the other day. ;)
**Democrats never let facts or reality prevent them from imposing their stupidity upon the people.**
Never have I seen a more concise and Accurate definition of ITHACANS.
When the “”COMMONunist Council”” members can pedal UP BUFFALO ST. without stopping, then I’ll consider their info... until then ... fuggedabowdit!
Obligatory:
If bicycles are outlawed, only outlaws will have bicycles.
“Registration” is never about bikes, or boats, or guns, or cars.
What gets registered is people. So that liberals and other fascists can control people.””
AMEN
EXACTLY!!!
FOTFL.
Everything that’s old is new again. When I was a child in Colorado Springs, we had to take our bikes down to the fire station to get bicycle tags. Every now and again I’ll come across a vintage bicycle with tags issues by one city or another. It used to be fairly common. I think they were only $2 though.
I think the real issue here is the idea that it isn’t just directed at residents. Anyone riding through town is supposed to stop and register their bike with the city.

That is sooooooooooooooooo gay.
In case there was any doubt which finger of the Finger Lakes Ithaca was on.

The city of evil strikes again. Wow.
