Hillsdale College Professor on Sotomayor Nomination: 'Identity Politics Are Not 'Progressive'
Investors Business Daily ^ | 6-4-09 | Professor Thomas Krannawitter

Progressive Americans — the kind who voted for President Obama — champion progress, change and new eras of, well, everything as hallmarks of their success.

Progressives, by definition, teach the American past as a sad story, the repeat of which should be avoided at all costs. They view with contempt the days when an individual's worth was determined by inescapable incidents of birth, especially skin color and gender, and they congratulate themselves for having evolved beyond those kinds of prejudiced discriminations.

Great article. If I had kids, I would send them to Hillsdale. As long as we’re not all behind barbed wire fences and looking at Obama’s big poster with searchlights all over..

A well-meaning column, but once again a conservative fails to understand liberalism, and retroactively applies “progressive” intentions to the Founding Fathers.

Identity politics are the inevitable consequence of a diverse society. When Senator Dirksen and the majority of congressional Republicans joined the leftist non-Southern Democrats in passing the 1965 immigration bill, the tribalism we see today was the inevitable consequence. The more diverse we become, the more race-conscious, tribal, and divided we will become.

Appealing to the Founding Fathers, who didn't have to deal with diversity of this kind, is fruitless. It's easy to say we're not going to be tribal when the only two non-white groups around (blacks & Native Americans) didn't have the franchise. Neither did women.

'Identity Politics Are Not 'Progressive'

A very good observation. Identity politics are nothing but pure tribalism- Essentially the opposite of progress.

Since "con" is the opposite of "pro" and “progressives” in general mean “liberals” (Who actually impede progress) I suggest the proper term should be “Congressives” (Congress is clearly the opposite of progress)

Very good article. Thanks for posting. WELCOME ABOARD! GRRREAT college!

The socialists/collectivists, those intellectual hijackers, have even stolen the term “progressive”.

EVERY anti-truth, anti-freedom, anti-individual collectivist or member of any multitude of said divisive collectives would love him (Barack) because he is their ultimate mirror/puppet/spokesman-woman-metrosexual. He can be all things to all people. SS fits his template...is another mirror in his house of grotesque mirrors...

...yet he is absolutely NOTHING/ZERO to ANY INDIVIDUAL not connected to his BS, his BO, his web of dividers/deceivers.
