Facing a long slump, Cessna plans more cuts

Cessna Aircraft will have another round of job cuts as it grapples with economic uncertainty and a deteriorating business jet market, CEO and president Jack Pelton told employees in a memo Thursday.

The company didn't say how many jobs will be lost. Sixty-day layoff notices are expected to be issued by June 19, and employees have until Tuesday to apply for voluntary layoffs.

"The industry continues to struggle as the economic recovery remains very slow and the negative perception surrounding business jets creates a battle to keep our customers sold," Pelton said.

The layoffs will be in addition to 6,900 previously announced job cuts. Cessna has reduced its work force by 45 percent since November, when it employed 15,500, including 12,000 in Wichita.

Cessna announced 2,300 layoffs in late April. Of those, 1,600 workers -- including 1,300 in Wichita -- were issued 60-day notices April 29. Some employees say they expect the remaining 700 notices to be issued today.

In addition to the layoffs, Cessna plans a four-week shutdown starting this month. Additional furloughs might be necessary, Pelton said.

Cirrus Aircraft in Duluth, MN is adding workers to go from 6 to 8 planes a month and is seeing a trend to 12 aircraft per month.
The article I read stated that they are starting to see customers who would normally be buying a small business jet, coming into their shop for an aircraft.

If you can, take a look at a LIFE magazine from the 1950’s in contrast to where we're going now.

It's very sad, and so unnecessary.
