European elections 2009: BNP wins first seat in Yorkshire and the Humber

Sending shock waves through the mainstream political parties, the British National Party won a seat in the European Parliament for the first time in its history after receiving 120,139 votes in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

The far right party's Andrew Brons took the last of the six seats up for grabs.

Nick Griffin, the leader of the BNP, said that the presence of his party in Brussels would "transform British politics". He added that Britain had become a "bankrupt slum" under Labour.

"The party is going to go on and grow very rapidly," he said.

"We're going to be major contenders in a number of places in the next general election and the next wave of council elections - we're going to do very well indeed."

Brons is a veteran of far-Right politics. As a teenager he joined the neo-Nazi British National Socialist party.

He stood five times for the National Front in the 1970s after a brief spell as its leader, which ended in internal quarrels.

The 61-year-old was fined £50 by Leeds magistrates in 1984 for using insulting words and behaviour after a confrontation with police.

Last year he retired as a politics and government teacher at Harrogate College, and re-entered active politics.

He is "implacably opposed" to the UK's membership of the European Union and intends to "expose the activities and corruption of the EU to strengthen Britain's case for withdrawal", the BNP said.

The election of a BNP Euro MP is a significant blow to Gordon Brown. The BNP took the seat from Labour, which saw its share of the vote in the region drop by 8 per cent on the last European elections in 2004.

Labour supporters and MPs will be disgusted that it is under a Labour government that the BNP have made

I prefer the UK Independence Party to the crypto-fascists of the BNP, but I am not sorry to see this message delivered loud and clear to Labour.

That’s good. But if Bobby Jindal, Sarah Palin, Ronald Reagan, Rush Limbaugh were Europeans they would probably be considered neo-Nazis.

The BNP is right on immigration but

A)They ARE racist, only whites may join.

B)They are leftist on economics, most of their votes come at Labour’s expense which is why I find it amusing they (and Nazis) are called “far-right”.

In short they suck.

Cameron while a CINO wants the Tories to leave the pro euro superstate EPP-ED and join a new Euro-skeptic bloc. Still I would have likely voted UKIP for the Euro parliament.

No doubt that they suck, but if they can keep a few Labour types out of office, so be it.

In other words, they’re still Nazis. When I see a left-right comparison where Europe is concerned, it’s really just two different prongs of the left wing. Europe could really use an ACTUAL right wing, not just another finger on the left hand.

Agreed. The two major put downs which has decent souls aghast- Nazi and Racist. I would have had a quiet evening until I saw this post. Yorkshire and the Humber is it?

It is 1941, I am fifteen miles from the city of Hull, Yorkshire. Up from London to avoid the bombing. They tell me of the havoc and the destruction in the gallant city of Hull. Not to go on, but the Luftwaffe battered it and destroyed the great department store- Hammonds of Hull. The painting "King of Kings" on display ( I had seen it) was destroyed. Hundreds killed.

Oh Nazis is it? A bunch of politician activists, Nazis? Yorkshire knew what Nazis were at one time. They killed people.

Please excuse this rant.

As much as I hate the BNP, it’s great to see them win this election. As long as the right-wing wins the UK elections I say fill the entire EU delegation with racist nationalist socialists. It’d be great to see some antagonism. Maybe slowdown the plans to cut up British culture.

It should certainly send the other parties into soul searching mode.

You stole the words I was going to say! In Euroland, their “right-left” spectrum is a lot different than ours. Their “conservatives” are a lot like the Southern Democratic Party and their liberals are like today’s Democrap party. Euros simply don’t get what our right wing is. They associate “right wing” with fascism (Extreme liberalism mixed with social conservatism) because nobody in Europe truly knows what economic liberty is.

Ah yes. Well, you'll want the A39. Oh, no, you've got the wrong map there. This is Stalingrad. You want the Ilfracombe and Barnstaple section.

BNP has supporters among the Indian population of the UK. Problem is they are likely to be threatened with vile reprisals.

We now learn via Drudge; (see left hand column denoting the Daily Telegraph) also with video, Griffin was pelted with eggs outside the Parliament. He had to beat a hasty retreat. The cries were "Nazis out, Nazis Out. "

As I have often said, those fat beggers never saw a Nazi- or heard them either. I would empathise with free demonstrations- if their angst was directed at Muslims in London (replete with howls).

I would for the Euro parliament where they win seats under proportional representation. This time they came in second to the Tories.

But I’d stick with the Tories and TINOs for Parliament and local councils, where the UKIP is a trivial factor.
