Michelle Obama has paid a surprise visit to London.

During her visit on Monday, America's First Lady was pictured clutching a rather unusual souvenir – a publication bearing a picture of Michael Martin, the former Speaker of the Commons.

Mr Martin was forced to resign last month following his mishandled response to the MPs' expenses scandal.

The wife of President Obama was in London on a private visit with their daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, eight.

They stayed on in Paris for sightseeing on Sunday, while the President returned to the US following his tour of Europe.

It is thought they flew into London by private jet early on Monday morning, before paying a brief visit to Westminster in the afternoon.

Later, Mrs Obama visited The Audley pub in Mayfair, where regulars saw her disappear into an upstairs room before leaving with her daughters.
