Convicted British ‘shoe-bomber’ terrorist Richard Reid, who was found guilty in 2003 of trying to blow up a transatlantic commercial flight, has been refusing food for several weeks and is being force fed by authorities in a US prison.
Reid is currently serving a life sentence in the notorious Supermax prison in Denver, America’s highest-security federal lockup, after he was convicted of trying to ignite two bombs in his shoes while on board a Paris-to-Miami flight on American Airlines. He was subdued by passengers before he could detonate the explosives.
Reid, 35, has refused 59 meals since March at the Supermax prison, a federal government lawyer said in court filings.
The government attorney, in a previously undisclosed court filing dated April 14, wrote that prison officials determined on April 7 "that medical intervention was necessary" and Reid was being force fed and hydrated.
In an updated court filing last Friday, the government attorney wrote that Reid remains on the hunger strike and that prison officials continue to monitor his condition.
It is not known if Reid's hunger strike is related to another lawsuit he has filed against prison officials. A spokeswoman at the federal prison headquarters in Washington, DC, said yesterday that the bureau does not comment on the conditions of inmates.
The lawsuit filed by Reid, who was born in Bromley, south London, alleges that prison authorities have repeatedly prevented him from following the tenets of his Sunni Muslim faith. A US District Court judge in Denver recently denied the authorities' request to throw out his lawsuit.
The Supermax facility houses the most notorious federal inmates including Ramzi Yousef, convicted of the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing, and Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski.

Reid and Supermax are outside Florence, 100 miles SSW of Denver. I wonder what else they got wrong.

A guy I went to high school with was sentenced there for domestic terrorism. He wept at the sentencing. (TN)
This is exactly what will happen when the Gitmo Gang arrives. 300 Prisoners can start 3000 lawsuits and crash the legal system in their area.

I say he should be force fed. Just be sure to shove everything in from the opposite end. I heard he likes pineapple and coconuts.

They won’t allow him to decapitate Shi’ite inmates.
I can not imagine a more terrible way to die than by starvation.I would put a 42 inch plasma HD tv in his cell and show nothing but Wendy’s,Pizza Hut,Outback,you get the picture, commercials 24 7.
I say let him die - starving must be a painful way to die.

Supermax gives no inmate interaction and has a 23/1 policy. Ankle Bracelets are worn at all times. It is the master of control. You make it to this place you are one evil MF.

He’d obviously rather die than be imprisoned. Good. Force-feed the s.o.b. plenty of pork sausage, ham, scrapple, pig skins — all those great prison treats.

I guess being in a supermax prison he may not get the pampering he would in a state prison. I truly don’t care if he doesn’t eat. They can force feed him but I see no point in wasting the time, effort or food. Let him think he has 72 virgins waiting for him & get out of our lives. I have no pity for someone who wanted to kill others.
I have no pity ether- I suspect there is a guy in the current administration who does if you know what I mean.
But doesn’t Wendy’s have bacon cheeseburgers? If you really want to taunt him, just have a few prison guards eat a falafel the size of a basketball in front of him. That’ll send the message better.

And because of the Gitmo screaming of the uberlibs with the help of our state run media, Zero plans to import lots of foreign Reids. So it will take lots of people to deal with this kind of behavior from each one of them and we will no doubt get daily front page stories Couric/Olbermann/Matthews-type whining on the networks for every antic of every Gitmo prisioner brought to US soil.
