"The government of the former US dependency is understood to be willing to accept some if not all of the 17 ethnic Uighur detainees who have become a symbol of Mr Obama's difficulties with closing the controversial prison."
"American states that were initially amenable to accepting the group have got cold feet, while none of the major US allies have been willing to help. Washington has determined the Uighurs can't be returned to China because they might face persecution. All had reportedly trained at terror camps in Afghanistan and allegedly belonged to a separatist movement in the western Xinjiang region.
Three US officials familiar with the situation told the Associated Press that Palau was now the prime candidate for their relocation.
Negotiations with the island over prisoners come as a $200 million assistance package is also being prepared. A senior US state department official described as "completely false" any connection between the two."

Whatever happened to the good old days of plausible deniability?
So Obama is moving them from a tropical island prison to another tropical island prison, when the first one is already up-and-running and fully staffed? WTF?!

I know I'd be up for a Pacific vacation if they did.
That's not true. I'll take 'em and only charge 1% of what those island clowns are getting.
deserted islands.......Low tide....pier pilings.....crabs......barnacles.....sharks....industrial strength cop tie wraps.......works for me....
Hopefully, they’ll put them on one of the islands without an airport.
The Chinese government had declared they want the Uighurs repatriated back to China.
I very much doubt they’ll be treated as nicely by Chinese as they were in Gitmo.
Most likely the Chinese will have a nice surprise in store for the Uighurs....like a bullet to the back of the head.
Why not just let these guys walk out the front gates of Gitmo and leave it up to them to figure out where they;re going to go and how to get there if they can find a place to take them. Otherwise they can stay in Cube (I’m sure Castro can find a use for them, even if it’s prison labor in their wonderful facilities and system). Spring ‘em with a handful of change for the pay phone, a few bucks to eat off of, some toiletries, a decent set of clothes and shoes and tell them adios, then slam the door behind them. They managed to behave in a way to get them thrown into Gitmo; let them figure out their own ticket out, too.
Maybe Cuba will give them asylum, lol!
NOoooo!!! dont taint Micronesia with these pigs!
“Native-born Palauans, who enjoy a standard of living twice that of Filipinos, are allowed to enter the United States without passports or visas.”
"Native-born" means citizens. Palau is a sovereign country since an agreement in 1994 under which:
"... most citizen of Palau (but not alien spouses and children who are not Palaun citizens) enjoy unique immigration privileges. They may work, study and reside in the United States in non-immigrant status without a U.S. visa."Sounds very familiar: native-born or natural-born.
So the question will be, some where down the line, will these Al Qaeda trained terrorists come up with a birth certificate or proof of live birth to slip through and reach the American heartland.
What's this country's track record on protecting itself from this sort of thing?
Can we bring our own reloads?
I smell a bunch of our taxpayer money going to someone who is greedy, just so zero can say eventually he closed Gitmo.
Each Pacific Islander will also receive a green Chrysler or GM automobile of his choice.
That’s not fair. I need to behead some little kids and shoot American soldiers so I can go live in Palua. Oh well, I guess living in Oklahoma is better than being a murdering Muslim.
That is exactly what I was hinting at.
