GOP Denounces Government-Run Health Care; Filibuster May Not Be Possible

Republican members of the Senate Finance Committee Monday denounced the Democratic health care reform plan, which President Obama insists must contain a “public option” for the uninsured, calling it government-run health care.

The question now, however, is whether GOP senators can – or will – stop the Democrat-controlled committee and Senate from passing the bill.

Nine Republicans on the committee sent a letter to the White House Monday as a warning that a government-run health care system would do the American people more harm than good. .....

“At a time when major government programs like Medicare and Medicaid are already on a path to fiscal insolvency, creating a brand-new government program will not only worsen our long-term financial outlook but also negatively impact American families who enjoy the private coverage of their choice,” they [Republicans] wrote.

“Washington-run programs undermine market-based competition through their ability to impose price controls and shift costs to other purchasers,” the senators added.

Democrats, who run both the House and the Senate, are considering health care propositions, drafted by Sens. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), that include employers covering all full-time workers or pay a penalty to the federal government.

In addition, they are also considering a “health exchange” aimed at making insurance coverage affordable and provide a “public plan”—a government-run option to cover those who cannot afford private insurance as well as create new taxes to pay for universal coverage.

The Republicans say that including a public plan isn’t needed. .... In order to stop the bill, however, all Republicans would need to vote in favor of a filibuster – or blocking maneuver – which means the GOP will have to keep those Republicans – like Snowe – who tend to squeeze to the other side of the aisle from doing so.

Filibuster won't be possible. But, it may be possible to pick off some of the Dems in the reddish states.

Barry and the Dems will pay a heavy price for shoving this garbage through to pass.

If they can’t get past a vote to continue a filibuster, they should have an organized walk-out claiming they don’t want to be present when nation destroying legislation is enacted.

Not as heavy as the one we'll pay, alas.

It will pass because there are Republicans too scared of their own shadows to actually stand on principles

Every single R must hold the line on this

If somehow we could get Ben Nelson and perhaps the Senator from Alabama, this thing could get stopped.

Its actually the reverse. If they pick up a few Blue Dog Dems they can have a filibuster threat keeping it from a vote. They won’t have enough with a few Blue Dogs to defeat it outright and should not risk letting it come to a vote if they have the power to prevent the vote.

C’mon, Dems. Try - just try - to tax health insurance benefits and limit medical options. I’m gonna long the market on tar and feathers.

That actually makes more sense.

I am getting guilty pleasure from the cries of seniors who voted for Obama and now find that healthcare rationing by age is a major part of government healthcare.

Why do the Repubs never have a “parliamentary procedure” to utilize yet Dems seem to have a full deck of them as needed for any situation?

I’m with you - The Republicans have to be against this, no matter what the outcome. I am hoping that public sentiment, flooding phone lines, demonstrations are enough to stop it.

I have other things I’d like to see that would help but those comments are not for a polite forum.

If Ted Kennedy or any ill member of Congress had to go in to the same kind of plan as they are planning for us, they would have departed our company a long time ago..

Let’s see... nationalization of the banking industry, nationalization of the healthcare industry, destruction of the auto and insurance industries, billions to defraud voters, limits on executive pay, destruction of SS and Medicare, exponential increase in the national debt... How much more of a price are we able to bear? Moreover, how much more of a price are we able to bear before the shooting starts?

It is time to contact your representatives, no matter what their party affiliation. It’s time to dust off the ping lists, update contact lists, and send daily emails to friends, colleagues, countrymen. It’s time to get involved, and it is time to BEAT THE LIBERALS AND RINOS BLACK AND BLUE, just as we did with amnesty.

Let’s get started.

How ‘bout getting out on cameras (the few of you that can actually speak coherently) and MAKE A CASE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Begin by telling them HOW MUCH OF THEIR STINKIN MONEY IT IS GOING TO COST.

Try to explain how THEIR HEALTH CARE WILL BE RATIONED.

Just for starters. Could you save the white flags until AFTER the vote?

Harry and Louise have flown the coop. Too much of the business community actually likes the idea of gov run healthcare now. (willing to sacrifice the future in exchange for short-term bump to the P&L)
