June 9, 2009 In the artwork, it looks so simple: dust clumps into planets that grow into nice, orbiting solar systems like ours. Its not so simple when you try to nail down the real physics. Planet-building models have to contend with a host of variables and barriers to growth (accretion). Another barrier was discussed in Astrophysical Journal this month: the electric barrier...

Thanks for the ping!
Planet-building is simple and been done. I refer you to the movie called A hitchikers guide to the Universe. It is explained in detail how this is done.
That’s an especially funny one today, GGG. I especially like the conclusions, which boil down to “science is hard, so let’s try something simpler (God Diddit)”.
Throwing pearls before swine is counter productive, especially if thrown in water over the swine’s head.
The pearl is actually Hitch Hiker’s guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
Thanks for the correction. I saw it again the other day. My favorite character is the robot.
Hey if a drunk guy laying on the side of the road can figure out how to make a couple of mice in champagn glasses do it....DON'T PANIC
I absolutely hated the movie btw.
I blame Copernicus. He started this thirst for knowledge crap. LOL
AAhhh Marvin(I think). You must read the book. Otherwise you'll never know what frogs do that drove the man who learned the Whole Absolute Truth about everything insane. (They really don't tell you anyways though). It's still an excellent read.
I am most certainly a Christian. However, this Creationist stuff is beyond stupid. Please, stop embarrassing those of us who are actual scientists with this tripe.
LOL! I’ve suspected all along that the earth never existed. How could any object be created in conformance with the laws of nature/God and yet produce the likes of Liberals? This world is a figment of a superbeing’s nightmare. /sarc
I guess you think that Terra forming is the work of the devil???
Absolutely so. In order to tinker and putter with DNA's and weather cycles would take millions of years. Geophysical transformations could take 100's of millions. The technology to do it is unthinkable. But it is, here. I love my creator. Love your pond goo if you like.
Get real. Your just another Darwiniac who likes to call the Bible “stooooopid.”
God did do it, BlowFish. He even gives you the power to argue against your spiritual heritage.
The Evos would have to be able to explain Terra formation before anyone could point to it and call it the work of the Devil. Duh!
You would have to read science stuff to understand it.. Knowledge is good..
problems growing plants, God?
The answer’s right here: http://www.viewpoints.com/Scotts-Miracle-Gro-All-Purpose-Plant-Food-reviews
My plants have been taking off since using this stuff!
Why is it that “actual scientist” will not examine their own house of cards to see what the ‘facts’ are, as in evolution, global warming and environmentalism. Talk about beyond stupid and a serving of tripe.
You obviously know way more than your co-religionists in the Temple of Darwin. We are all ears, genius.
Simple, we can find ways to warm up the atmosphere on Mars.. Genetic engineer plants to survive the atmosphere on Mars.. Have comets crash on the planet to do all sort of stuff. I think you would have loved living in the dark ages..
In the micro-second we have been a species you see what we have done. What makes you think that if don't destroy ourselves WE could not seed planets with life?
Good you already agree to pansporia. What makes you think we are a result of chance when mechanics (engineering) are a simpler solution?
Cause I’m not a sourpuss like you..
Don’t wimp out now (I am a bit of a sour-puss, I admit it lol) You already accepted pansporia (seeding of life on worlds) What’s stopping the billions of potential life-bearing planets from developing the technology ahead of us and starting us?
Nothing.. Just want get off this rock and seed the galaxy.. With variations of humanity (i.e. modifying the human race to survive on different planets)..
Forget the above discussion,,, the thread title is great!
Where are those shrooms I’ve been saving...
These seeded planets, would you leave them to evolve on their own or would you give them instruction booklets on how best to conduct themselves?
On their own.. Free will.
Yes, by someone to whom it was "simple."
Really amusing to see men trying to imagine-up how it could have been done without him. Morons!
Nah, Tubal Cain beat him by many millenia.
The Bible isn't stupid, but it isn't a science book either.
Bowing to the great Dr. of Do-Do!
Surely you know more than God does; if not you, then the god and jesus that you re-invented.
The real laugh is that it takes life to make the goo!
Back to square one...
Don't underestimate the power of ignorance.
A free for all. They were your creation, Don't you have some responsability for their developement/well-being? If they evolve into a future threat can you wash your hands of them and say I extingueshed them and I am blameless, when you did nothing to guide them, only exterminate them?
You and I have grossly different definitions of 'simple.'
We can't warm up the atmosphere of Earth, a placed designed for us, enough to halt the crop failures in Siberia, and Canada, but we're going to do it on a planet we can't live on? This stuff is definately for dreamers.
We won't; we've watched you use it so naturally, that we're in awe.
The movie(s) are a travesty. Start at the beginning and read all 4 of the little books. I have read them several times.
After reading you might be able to take part in the discussion on the answer to the ultimate question. Some think it is 42 but others of us think it is 38. Douglas Adams says Forty-Two.
Keep your towel handy and above all, Don’t Panic
Anything is posible for GOD. You should know that. We were made in his image. Someday every thing will be possible for us. Some day.
I’m going to let you in on the secret. THE QUESTION TO THE ULTIMATE ANSWER: When was the last time this telephone was cleaned? You heard it here first.
IOW, according to evidence, Jupiter formed further out. It has more mass than all the other known solar planets and asteroids -- combined.Jupiter's Composition Throws Planet-formation Theories into DisarrayExamining four-year-old data, researchers have found significantly elevated levels of argon, krypton and xenon in Jupiter's atmosphere that may force a rethinking of theories about how the planet, and possibly the entire solar system, formed. Prevailing theories of planetary formation hold that the sun gathered itself together in the center of a pancake-shaped disk of gas and dust, then the planets begin to take shape by cleaning up the leftovers. In Jupiter's current orbit, 5 astronomical units from the sun, temperatures are too warm for the planetesimals to have trapped the noble gases. Only in the Kuiper belt -- a frigid region of the solar system more than 40 AU from the sun -- could planetesimals have trapped argon, krypton and xenon.

While lead researcher Tobias Owen does not put much stock in the idea that Jupiter might have migrated inward to its present position, other scientists on the team say the idea merits consideration. Owen expects the probes will find similarly high levels of noble gases in Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Hints of these gases have even been found in the thick atmosphere of Venus, another planet now begging more study.
The number 42
Douglas Adams was asked many times during his career why he chose the number 42. Many theories were proposed, but he rejected them all. On November 3, 1993, he gave an answer on alt.fan.douglas-adams:
“The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought ‘42 will do.’ I typed it out. End of story.
Bahh, no wonder the monkeys picked it out of a scrabble bag and he couldn’t come up with the question.
An artist's drawings are great for illustrating someone's theories but that hardly makes it reality.
Nor does all the computer simulations. Planet formation is still an unknown process.
“The survey observations support the theory that disk concentration is a necessary step in planet formation, but the specifics appear different. Astronomers originally expected that the large dust grains would settle first, followed by smaller grains, then the gas. However, the Hubble observations revealed it was “all or nothing,” according to Grady. That is, the team did not see some flared disks with large grains, other flared disks with smaller grains, and flared disks of gas. Either a disk had a flare with everything in it, or it had no flare at all. It may be that after the large grains settle, they no longer block light from the central star, which causes the smaller grains and the gas to vanish. “The small grains go solar sailing out of the system, pushed by pressure from the star's light, which also breaks down the gas molecules,” said Grady.

But getting a paper published is what counts.
I hear the new Star Trek movie is great.
Can I ask an important question?
The liquid miracle grow I purchased had the numbers 24-4-8.
I did a little research, and found the first number is for ‘green’ growth, the second number is for “fruits and flowers”, the third for “root development”.
For my vegetable and flower garden, shouldn’t I be getting a mix with a higher second number?
I was thinking of taking it back to the store.
We could, if the enviro-nazis and socialists would get out of the way.
