WASHINGTON — As the health care debate heats up, the American Medical Association is letting Congress know that it will oppose creation of a government-sponsored insurance plan, which President Obama and many other Democrats see as an essential element of legislation to remake the health care system.

The AMA has no clout whatsoever.

AMA is in the pocket now of the private insurers?

That’s going to be news to their membership.

My father is a physician, and very conservative. He was formerly a member of the AMA and donated quite a bit of money to their PAC over the years. He left the AMA a number of years ago when they started supporting abortion and other liberal agenda items.

If the AMA is actually opposing the public health insurance option, then it must be pretty bad, because the AMA is pretty liberal these days. Alone, this isn’t earth shattering, but it’s good news for our side, IMO.

I’ll be watching for the demonization, if 0bama et al feel it is necessary, of greedy doctors who will be portrayed as only one notch less greedy than those Wall St. ba***rds who got us into this mess.

I agree with you. The AMA has long had liberal leanings. I think it the American Physcians and Surgeons that support conservative causes.

“The introduction of a new public plan threatens to restrict patient choice by driving out private insurers, which currently provide coverage for nearly 70 percent of Americans.”

Translation: HMOs with their executive pay, advertising, etc. costs cannot compete in a free market with government.

How many AMA honchos are sitting on HMO boards, hold HMO shares?

This is good. Right? I thought the AMA had good lobbyists.

Going back to my mantra . . . we need the 17th Amendment Repealed.

Not that it would solve ALL our problems, but it would solve about half of them.

Read Article 1, Section 3 of the US Constitution.

It wasn’t doctors or lawyers or indians or chiefs who got us in this mess. It’s the bankers behind the Central Bank.

0bambi is just their “puppet du jour.” And he’s so narcissistic that he’s totally unaware. The little twit.

“This is good. Right?”

What they are offering is Romneycare, making sure everyone is insured by criminalizing the uninsured. It’s a liberal/private insurer alliance.

Some want the “government option” too. Basically something like Medicare expanded. But HMOs cannot compete, their business models are too costly.

This article basically admits that, though the AMA tries to make it sound like an issue of fairness.

Yep. And docs are not going to fight it. They are too few in number, and the GOP turned tail at the first sign of battle the last time docs tried. I hope docs wise up and unionize.

NONSENSE--show me the numbers. Lefty docs are the ones trying to anything to escape having to practice medicine.

Big news sort of, every interest group (doctors, insurers, unions, AARP, etc.) has been lobbying behind closed doors with the Kennedy caucus and Baucus to get their share of the pie.

I’m glad the AMA has finally said something publicly, but it is significant because TOTUS is planning to address/pressure the AMA in an event this Monday. Otherwise, I doubt we’d hear much from AMA until hard decisions on the exact legislation are reached.

“I hope you enjoy your new GMO”

Got a ways to go until Medicare.

But most I know are glad to get into it. More freedom of choice of doctors.
