TV Host 'Makes Rape Jokes' About Palin's Teen (David Letterman)
Sky News ^ | 6/11/09 | Sky News

TV host David Letterman has been criticised for making "sexually perverted" comments and "rape jokes" about Sarah Palin's teenage daughter.

The former vice presidential candidate hit back after he called her "slutty" and appeared to suggest her 14-year-old child slept with a baseball star.

Letterman, the host of The Late Show on CBS, told his audience Mrs Palin looked like a "slutty flight attendant" on a trip to New York.

The Alaskan governor was there for a baseball game and to be honoured by a special needs group, accompanied by Willow, 14.

What interesting backpedalling! He wasn’t talking about the daughter who was AT the game, with her mother, when he said she was “knocked up” by A-Rod during the game. Noooooooo. He meant her other daughter who wasn’t there!

Yes, Dave, please keep ‘splainin. Why don’t you invite Todd Palin on the show? I bet your ratings would double (for one night). Oh, I forgot, can’t have any real men on that show.

I deleted CBS from the list of stations my TV receives and notified CBS. Not only will I no longer watch Letterman, but I will no longer watch anything on CBS. This seuxal “joke” about a 14 y/o girl was way too far over the line, and Letterman and CBS have made it clear that their response will not satisfy basic human decency. [Posting on multiple threads in the hopes of reaching as many Freepers as possible and encouraging them to delete CBS too.]

In town to be honored by a special needs group, for the dedication she has shown to her and Todd's youngest, and she gets ridiculed as looking like a slutty flight attendant and this has-been (I dunno, maybe he's even a never-was, but he sure has made a lot money and that says something completely different about the U.S. of A.) makes sexual jokes abut her fourteen-year old daughter, on national TV!

Meanwhile that bee-otch of a First Lady, who looks like an NFL linebacker, goes around London and Paris on our nickel, dressed in what looks like a table cloth from a day care center, and they all rave about her.

Yes....the article should say "statutory rape", not "rape".

It might just be a regional linguistic difference but those are two very different things to me.

I don't want to start a big flame war over this....it's just that when something is so inflammatory, it should be carefully parsed.

Now Mr. Palin? I could see Mr. Palin wanting to have "a word" with Letterman, but I don't think Letterman has the nads for that.

Waaaaaay back in the 80s, I was a big fan of Late Night with David Letterman. When he was on NBC. I think I’ve watched the CBS show maybe twice or three times ever. I think he became a bitter loser when Jay Leno got the Carson gig. And then when Jay continually beat him in the ratings. Plus, sophomoric humor from a 40something year old is one thing. From a 60somthing, I guess it does get a little old. Anyway, the days of Larry Bud Melman are long gone.

My e-mail to CBS:

I am writing to express my extreme disgust at David Letterman's comment about Sarah Palin's 14-yr old daughter, Willow Palin, being knocked-up (raped) by the baseball player Alex Rodriguez occurring during the 7th inning of the game. In addition, I am highly offended by his comment about Gov. Sarah Palin having a 'slutty' look.

These comments goes far, far beyond the pale of comedy. I insist and demand that you fire David Letterman immediately, issue an profound apology on behalf of CBS, and never ever again allow jerks like this on your network.

Any apology by Letterman is not acceptable. The firing of this jerk will be the only acceptable and decent response by your network.

I await to see and hear your needed response.

Remember how funny Chris Elliot was? The mistake with Dave was changing his show. They gussied it all up, tried to make a big deal out of it, which totally blew the whole concept. Part of what made it so fun was that it was simple, low budget, and silly. The show itself was a joke, and that was part of the appeal. He started taking himself seriously. That was the downfall.

I'm not defending the ass but, I don't see where he ever implied "rape".

Well if Alex Rodriguez got the little girl pregnant during the baseball game as the joke went, how exactly would that have occurred? Since she's only 14, she can't legally consent to sex with an adult man under any circumstances. Were the joke to be true, Mr. Rodriguez would be facing felony child rape charges in New York. Also, even if the little girl were above the age of consent there is nothing whatsoever to suggest that she would consent to having sex with Mr. Rodriguez during the ballgame.

Even if the girl in the joke were an adult, the suggestion that she would willingly have sex with some celebrity baseball player at the game is a very slanderous and rude comment. I am sure that most of the guys in attendance at the ballgame would consider such a joke about their wife or girlfriend to be "fighting words". Such a joke about their teenage daughter would probably start a fight instantly.

sex with anyone underaged is prima facie statutory rape. it doesn’t need to be explicitly stated, as that is the very definition.

Letterman said he was talking about the older daughter, which is just as bad, but here is the story:

Letterman, the host of The Late Show on CBS, told his audience Mrs Palin looked like a "slutty flight attendant" on a trip to New York.

The Alaskan governor was there for a baseball game and to be honoured by a special needs group, accompanied by Willow, 14.

"One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game," Letterman then quipped on-air.

"During the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez."

I get what you're saying, but you're just begging for trouble arguing about it. IMO, they probably didn't know which daughter was there, and didn't care. I doubt it was intended to be a joke about statutory rape. They were trying to combine two current events--Palins at a ballgame, and Arod being a scandal-magnet. It was a crass joke, but not a rape joke, imo. They tried to tie in a joke about the Palin daughter who got pregnant, and Arod, and now they're getting blowback because the wrong daughter was at the game, and because there are a lot of people happy to try to take Letterman down for his leftist sympathies and advocacy. And it's got traction.

So you're best off just letting it be. You're swimming against a raging tide of anger. It's an excuse to go after Letterman, who has made his bed with the left. And so folks are going after him. I don't really care one way or the other. But I know from experience, when everyone is headed in one direction, it's pretty pointless to push against the tide. Let it be.

All that said, they really shouldn't even be making jokes about the older daughter getting knocked up. But whatever. Tastless jokes on late night tv don't shock or offend me. I couldn't care less.

Yes....the article should say "statutory rape", not "rape".

It might just be a regional linguistic difference but those are two very different things to me.

Statutory rape implies that the underage individual personally desired the relationship - even though they lack the maturity to consent. Suggesting, as the joke does, that Gov. Palin's 14 year old daughter would desire and/or willingly participate in sex with Alex Rodriguez, or any other celebrity baseball player for that matter, is repugnant. We have to assume, as one would with any other woman or girl, that she has no desire or willingness to engage in sexual activity with a stranger unless there is ample evidence otherwise.

Were that not to be the case then wouldn't many a rape charged really just be a "statutory rape"?
