TV Host 'Makes Rape Jokes' About Palin's Teen (David Letterman)

TV host David Letterman has been criticised for making "sexually perverted" comments and "rape jokes" about Sarah Palin's teenage daughter.

The former vice presidential candidate hit back after he called her "slutty" and appeared to suggest her 14-year-old child slept with a baseball star.

Letterman, the host of The Late Show on CBS, told his audience Mrs Palin looked like a "slutty flight attendant" on a trip to New York.

The Alaskan governor was there for a baseball game and to be honoured by a special needs group, accompanied by Willow, 14.

You are correct. Letterman implied ‘rape’.

I wasn’t aiming that at you, I was referring to Mr. Letterman and his comment. It came as a response to your post because you are the one who noted that he is now claiming he “meant Bristol” when he made his nasty comments.

my husband and i are both lawyers. he hadn’t heard about the letterman brouhaha til we saw them talking about it on Oreilly last night. my husband went ballistic, instantly screaming about him joking about statutory rape. we have a 14 yo daughter, same age as willow, i think he was imagining what he’d do to letterman, were he todd palin.

Letterman said he was talking about the older daughter, which is just as bad, but here is the story:

Letterman, the host of The Late Show on CBS, told his audience Mrs Palin looked like a "slutty flight attendant" on a trip to New York.

The Alaskan governor was there for a baseball game and to be honoured by a special needs group, accompanied by Willow, 14.

"One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game," Letterman then quipped on-air.

"During the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez."

I get what you're saying, but you're just begging for trouble arguing about it. IMO, they probably didn't know which daughter was there, and didn't care. I doubt it was intended to be a joke about statutory rape. They were trying to combine two current events--Palins at a ballgame, and Arod being a scandal-magnet. It was a crass joke, but not a rape joke, imo. They tried to tie in a joke about the Palin daughter who got pregnant, and Arod, and now they're getting blowback because the wrong daughter was at the game, and because there are a lot of people happy to try to take Letterman down for his leftist sympathies and advocacy. And it's got traction.

So you're best off just letting it be. You're swimming against a raging tide of anger. It's an excuse to go after Letterman, who has made his bed with the left. And so folks are going after him. I don't really care one way or the other. But I know from experience, when everyone is headed in one direction, it's pretty pointless to push against the tide. Let it be.

All that said, they really shouldn't even be making jokes about the older daughter getting knocked up. But whatever. Tastless jokes on late night tv don't shock or offend me. I couldn't care less.

Yes....the article should say "statutory rape", not "rape".

It might just be a regional linguistic difference but those are two very different things to me.

Statutory rape implies that the underage individual personally desired the relationship - even though they lack the maturity to consent. Suggesting, as the joke does, that Gov. Palin's 14 year old daughter would desire and/or willingly participate in sex with Alex Rodriguez, or any other celebrity baseball player for that matter, is repugnant. We have to assume, as one would with any other woman or girl, that she has no desire or willingness to engage in sexual activity with a stranger unless there is ample evidence otherwise.

Were that not to be the case then wouldn't many a rape charged really just be a "statutory rape"?

"Did you hear Barack Obama's daughter went to the ballgame the other day and got raped by one of the players? Ha ha ha ha! What, you didn't like that one?! Hey, it was only a joke! And Barack Obama is a public figure! Besides, I don't like him!"

"Did you hear David Lecherman's son went to the ballgame the other day and got molested by one of the players? Ha ha ha ha! What, you didn't like that one?! Hey, it was only a joke! And David Lecherman is a public figure! Besides, I don't like him!"

what offends and enrages me is the fact that were he to have made the joke about sasha or malia, there would be blood in the streets.

And there shouldn’t be any outrage about that, anyway.
After all, they could “get it taken care of” so as to not be “punished with a baby”.

It appears to me that there’s blood in the streets over this Palin gag. The left defends the left. The right defends the right.

this is just one of myriad things going on all around us to cause outrage. i guess that is what getting to me. the chrysler bankruptcy, mirandizing of terrorists, ramming national healthcare down our throats, on any given day there is enough in the news to make your head explode with the breathtaking audacity of it, and i keep asking WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE? it is as if the populace is bewitched, having sucked in enough Obams fairy dust to keep them in a stupor. i am just desperate to see SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE wake up and start screaming about anything, to break the spell.

is it being discussed in the MSM? i don’t know, bc i don’t watch it, but this is the kind of thing that mom and pop regular joe in the heartland could see as WRONG and outrageous. if the blood is just in the rightwing streets that’s not sufficient. bc if it was sasha and malia as the butt of the joke, it would be blood in MAIN STREET.

“Why don’t you grow a pair and invite Todd on your show!”

Bring A-Rod in on the same show. Todd and A-Rod could take turns correcting Letterman’s attitude.

Or better yet, another comedian. Larry the Cable Guy could beat the stuffing out of Dave and call it just a joke.

WHAP!!!! “That there’s funny now, that is.....” BAM! POW! “Lord forgive me...” SLAM!!! “be with the starvin’ pygmies in New Guinea....”

Me either. There sure seem to be a lot of stories about it posted here. Those stories are coming from somewhere. Dave commented on it, so they are definitely feeling a backlash. The MSM is liberal/left media, so why would I expect them to care? If they have reported on it, I presume they defend Dave--he's one of there's. I wouldn't expect the left to defend the right any more than I would expect the right to defend the left. That's why you won't find anyone on the right arguing that jeez, it was just a lame joke.

That casts you in the role of Al Sharpton. As long as you're comfortable with that.
