Schwarzenegger criticized by Democrats for budget threats

June 11, 2009

Democrats in the Legislature this afternoon condemned Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s vow to bring California government to a “grinding halt” if he and state lawmakers fail to balance the budget in time for the state to pay its bills this summer.

“To threaten to shut down the state is, in the governor’s own words, ‘hallucinatory’ and ‘irresponsible,’ ” Assemblywoman Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa), clearly frustrated, said during a session of the Legislature’s joint budget committee.

“That has so many serious ramifications and implications for our state’s economy, for our state’s long-term health, for our state’s residents -- and not only that, [but also] for the entire United States of America and, in fact, the world.”

Schwarzenegger told The Times editorial board Wednesday that he would refuse to take a high-interest loan that might be needed to keep the state afloat should budget negotiations stall. He wants to ensure that lawmakers do not dally, he said.

Finance officials say the California treasury will be bare by late July unless the projected $24-billion budget shortfall is resolved quickly.

"What we need to do is just to basically cut off all the funding and just let them have a taste of what it is like when the state comes to a shutdown -- grinding halt," the governor said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, he called the Senate Democrats’ budget outline “hallucinatory”; on Wednesday, he said it was “irresponsible.” Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) said during the committee meeting that the governor’s comments were overly negative.

I fled the state decades ago. It would not be appropriate for me to comment.

The Democrats alternative is worse: Raise taxes.

I’m with Arnold on this one...

The end was looming at least six months ago, and these jerks have done absolutely NOTHING.

Sunny State ping//

Just got back from northern LA county; I never saw the sun once, it was cool and cloudy all this week. At least not humid and warm like here.

Yeah, Arnie. All those voters who said NO to your tax scheme just really don't understand. Screw up government some more and maybe we'll get it. Great (/s) strategy.

What a complete moron this man is.

June is typically pretty gloomy in So Cal. But it was even more so this week.

The end was looming at least six months ago, and these jerks have done absolutely NOTHING.

They were moaning about a 41.8 billion deficit last December. When they finally passed the budget in February, it was doomed to fail. And they arrogantly bragged that they had no back-up plan because they would make sure the big-tax-props passed. And now they twiddle their thumbs, whine at each other, and devise new scare tactics. They are truly pathetic.

The phrase, "let them have a taste of what it is like," interests me. Let WHO have a taste...? The hard-working taxpayers who have been grabbing their ankles for the state their entire lives? Or the Democrats' base constituency of bums, losers, and parasites?

But wait a minute! Arnold’s a (Rush mocking voice here) “enlightened moderate who can easily work with the other side in the spirit of bipartisanship”

Remember all the folks here who told us to support Swarzenegger because he could win? Well, here we are.

Actually, if California defunds welfare, I will pop the champagne. It would be the best thing that could happen to the hand-out dependent.

“To threaten to shut down the state is, in the governor’s own words, ‘hallucinatory’ and ‘irresponsible,’ ”

Whereas as spending billions you don't have and can't afford to borrow, while taxing the public into oblivion, is the very definition of responsible stewardship of the body politic.

He might be surprised at how long it will take the average citizen to notice. When Clinton shut down the federal government, they had to send reporters out to find sob stories about federal employees to make sure the public was aware.

One thing's for sure: California's cities will burn this summer. It won't be pretty.

Whether through cuts or through default, the parasitic class will be left to their own devices.

Yep, LA and Oakland will both require the National Guard...just to protect the public buildings. Businesses and homes will burn.

The Inland Empire has seen an increase in gangs and welfare recipients—I wonder if they will move to Michigan, if money is stopped.

I would not want to be within a thousand miles of Kally-Fornea this summer if Ahnold locks the doors. It makes me glad that I have Oregon between me and them....

The good news is that there won’t be any brown-outs on the West Coast this summer, because so many houses have been foreclosed and the power shut off...
