Just Make Stuff Up
National Review Online ^ | June 12, 2009 4:00 AM | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 06/12/2009 2:44:26 AM PDT by WorkerbeeCitizen

In the first six months of the Obama administration, we have witnessed an assault on the truth of a magnitude not seen since the Nixon Watergate years. The prevarication is ironic given the Obama campaign’s accusations that the Bush years were not transparent and that Hillary Clinton, like her husband, was a chronic fabricator. Remember Obama’s own assertions that he was a “student of history” and that “words mean something. You can’t just make stuff up.”

Yet Obama’s war against veracity is multifaceted.

Trotskyization. Sometimes the past is simply airbrushed away. Barack Obama has a disturbing habit of contradicting his past declarations as if spoken words did not mean much at all. The problem is not just that once-memorable statements about everything from NAFTA to public campaign financing were contradicted by his subsequent actions. Rather, these pronouncements simply were ignored to the point of making it seem they were never really uttered at all.

It is certainly trivial to say it, but this so smacks of every dystopia liberals coughed up in the 20th century it is simply frightening. But then, this most resembles the nightmare scenario in ‘That Hideous Strength’ by Lewis: the cold, semi-shadowed powers calmly concocting lies and distortions that supine intellectuals lap up and happily regurgitate.

It’s disgraceful and will leave a permanent scar on our civilization.

Excellent! Here's the big question at the conclusion of the article:

Why has President Obama developed a general disregard for the truth, in a manner far beyond typical politicians who run one way and govern another, or hide failures and broadcast successes?

VDH gives 4 answers that are all correct, but I think he misses one: Obama is a sociopath. Probably all dictators have been. Sociopathic personalities are not bound by reality when it gets in the way of getting what they want, and they regard real facts and real people as simply something to be manipulated or gotten around. They are very good liars because the truth has no value to them. Sociopaths have, in a sense, no inner core and exist only in the way that they are affirmed from outside. Therefore, everyone around them must affirm them and empower them, and if this means creating a whole different "reality," so be it.

Normally, sociopaths don't make it this far in the world because reality, in the form of their verifiable past, catches up with them sooner or later and other people no longer believe them or continue to affirm them. But as VDH points out, the press is the one thing that could have called Obama to account for his wild mischaracterizations of his own and all other history; yet it is mesmerized by him for some reason and has probably contributed more than anything else to enabling him.

I’ve been watching 0bomo and it is obvious by now that he will say anything he thinks he can get away with. Anything that will resonate and make empty skulls resonate. The American people listen to his confident, self assured voice. Delivered in a low pitch. It is not what 0bomo says but how he says it. And they fall for this rubbish because they want to believe, want to be conned

The biggest faker ever to be president and he’s barely an American with his foreign Muslim father and years spent in Indonesia where he also learned Koran. And years in multicultural Hawaii where white Americans have always been a minority

That’s the way it works. When a civilization turns suicidal, the best thing is to get out of the way of the falling bits of it.

That’s the practical reason I moved from CA to NC. Sadly, a lot of the falling bits have followed me here.

Having the media in your pocket certainly helps. My opinion is that Obama makes conflicting statements to have soundbites to buttress his case, no matter which side he's arguing from. Because in the end it's all about maintaining power.

In front of a audience that wants Gitmo closed? There's plenty of those past statements to refer to,

In front of an audience that wants Gitmo to stay open? He's made statements for that argument also.

But the kool-aid drinkers never seem to catch on.

VDH points out that Obama counts on MSM cooperation to cover up his lies, mistakes...and their horrendous consequences. And so far, the big O’s trust in Chris Matthews et al is working out just fine. Every week we see more magazine covers featuring BO or the fair Michelle. Although one of the latest, a British publication, showed Michelle’s famous jaw jutting a la Aunt Esther in the back of a limo in London. (Usually they airbrush M until she looks like the tooth fairy.) Still, that’s small potatoes compared to the relentless barrage of TV Obama correctness which always includes denigration of any and all Republicans.

The only haven is Fox News, Rush, Mark Levin, and the rest of talk radio. The numbers bear this out: People won’t watch regular TV network news or buy newspapers in bed with the democratic party. The latest smear of Gov. Palin and her family is beyond belief, and the MSM’s snide coverage is sickening. SNL’s latest Palin skit writes itself and we bow to the tinpot lame brain dictator in DC.

Actually, it makes all the difference in the world!

IF we had a fair, non-biased media, his words would come back to haunt him in those very same sound bites to the point that he would have lower poll numbers than Dubya.

Lets all face up to the fact that the media is calling the shots and who they chose to support in today's entertainment-based world of superstar politics is totally perverting our government.

Our enemy is the media. They are liars, tellers of half-truths, ignorers of facts contrary to their storyline, and disrespectful of and antagonistic to the half of the country that share our values.

But the extent of Obama’s distortions suggests that he has complete confidence that observers in the media do not care — or at least do not care enough to inform the public.

I don't disagree with your assessment that Obama is a sociopath. I do think that his free pass in the media has allowed him to skate by on positive attention alone. What little criticism has actually surfaced in the media clearly stings him badly.

Once the economy collapses further, and foreign policy runs aground on some real problems, Obama will be hit by a level of criticism that will send him off the deep end. It will be trivial compared to what Bush used to endure, but while he became reclusive and insular, I don't think Obama can. I think he'll be drawn to criticism like a moth to fire, and it will consume him.

I've seen a similar thing happen with a brilliant textbook sociopath I was stuck working with for a while. The guy could twist the truth like he was changing channels on the TV, and his eyes were a portal to nothing. At one point, he became stuck in a controversy that not only could he not lie his way out of, but he didn't even seem to realize that trying to lie his way out of it was impossible. He became irate and hostile towards the criticism, and later furious with the 'idiots' who didn't understand his impossibly absurd excuses.

All of the critics, who only knew him in passing, were stunned. They thought he had just made a mistake; they had no idea he was actually not all there. In passing, he seemed like a very articulate and intelligent expert. It wasn't until exposed to sharp, public pressure directed at his competence that he publicly exposed his severe mental problems. (Which I knew about all too well, because I was stuck working with him for months)

I really think Obama's made of the same material. He'll be able to fool everyone in passing, and so long as the coverage is good, he'll be invincible. He's never been exposed to widespread derision, and he'll lose it if he is.

That's a very interesting idea. Obama is very thin-skinned and ridicule is the one thing that really seems to get to him. And you're right, I think many people are attributing to inexperience, ideology or even stupidity what is really a function of his psychopathology. So perhaps there will be a moment when suddenly, no matter what the press does, there will be no way of concealing the fact that he's simply nuts and we're dealing with something that has nothing to do with politics.

The frightening thing is, of course, that he will have so much power by the time this happens that he can make life very unpleasant for us all while his psychodrama plays out. My big hope is that he will implode sooner rather than later, that he will overreach in some way that makes it clear that we're not dealing with a normal political situation and people will suddenly wake up, and that he will do it before too much more damage is done.

And 0bamma has lots of support for this. His base is in Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and immigrants in general. These people are the up and comers and have expanding populations while “America as you know it” is shrinking. The Democrats recently said the Republican party is the party of bald old white guys

0bamma message is pitched to the 3rd world people within America and the 3rd world populations outside America. Such as Egypt where he goes to speak to the Muslim world

When the history of the world’s great con men is written, Obozo will certainly be at the top of the list.

We can only hope that his psychoses (severe mental disorders in which contact with reality is lost or highly distorted) — he most certainly has more than one — become more and more evident to the American people (and the world, for that matter) and he is, metaphorically, run out of WDC on a rail, tarred and feathered!

Perhaps the Obozo presidency, when it fails (as it surely must), will forever seal the doom of Socialism in America?
