Rep. Patrick Kennedy again receiving treatment
Boston Globe ^

Posted on 06/12/2009 5:59:36 AM PDT by outpostinmass2

WASHINGTON—Rep. Patrick Kennedy, who has struggled with depression, alcoholism and addiction for much of his life, said Friday that he has checked into a medical facility for treatment.

Discuss COMMENTS (17) The Rhode Island Democrat said in a statement that his recovery is a "lifelong process" and that he will do whatever it takes to preserve his health.

"I have decided to temporarily step away from my normal routine to ensure that I am being as vigilant as possible in my recovery," Kennedy said. He did not disclose where he was being treated.

Kennedy, who has wrestled with alcoholism, bipolar disorder, an addiction to prescription drugs and bouts of binge drinking, has often spoken publicly about his recovery and the importance of removing any stigma associated with mental illnesses. He has been a leading voice in Congress on mental health issues.

"I hope that in some small way my decision to be proactive and public in my efforts to remain healthy can help remove the stigma that has served as a barrier for many Americans reluctant to get the help they needed," he said.

Kennedy's office declined to offer any details about the congressman's health or what prompted him to seek treatment. He sought the treatment in the last few days, his office said.

As a Kennedy you don’t just check in without there being a story behind it. Probably got caught whacked out with his pants down in the ladies room and decided to “check himself in”.

Why is it that whenever anything happens to a “celebrity,” they always want to be an example for “the rest of us” - you know, “the little people”?

I hope his treatment is successful, and wish him a speedy recovery.

But, he has no place in the US House of Representatives. His constituents deserve better. If his last name wasn't Kennedy, he would have never been elected, much less re-elected.

Personally, I wish him well in his battle. Unfortunately, it does the people of Rhode Island a major disservice to have elected a representative who is still in the process of recovery and unable to devote his full time to their needs.

In May 2006, Kennedy, the son of Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., crashed his 1997 Ford Mustang into a security barrier on Capitol Hill in the early morning hours.

"Early morning" was about 2 A.M., and he nearly ran over a security guard outside of the Capitol. (he was so loaded, he said he was rushing to get there to vote on a bill - at 2 A.M.!) Of course, being a Kennedy and a Democrat, little was made of this incident in the MSM, and he was allowed to resume his duties in the House within a few weeks.

Gawd, is he ugly. We should use this photo instead of Helen Thomas' every once in a while just for gender equal rights.

Hey, let's not hurry his stay in the dry-out tank. As long as he's in some secluded rendezvous, he can't be casting his liberal votes in the House. Pray that he's still among the missing during all the socialized health care votes.

anything happens to a “celebrity

Define celebrity.

Patrick Kennedy a celebrity? He's a drunk, druggie lowlife. We the taxpayers have to pay for his health care and life time pension. If he's a celebrity then the wino's on skid row are celebs.

Chicago Sun-Times (IL) - Thursday, June 4, 2009
Author: Michael Sneed, The Chicago Sun-Times
THE KENNEDY BEAT . . .

Begorrah! The Merchandise Mart’s Chris Kennedy may not yet have “officially” announced his bid for the U.S. Senate in Illinois — but his cousin, Ted Kennedy Jr., did the “unofficial deed.”

- To wit: “I was told not to talk politics tonight, but . . . you here in Illinois can have your own Sen. Kennedy — my cousin, Chris , is running,” Ted Kennedy Jr. said at an Access Living dinner at Navy Pier Tuesday night.

- Backshot: U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy ‘s son made the statement while accepting an award on behalf of his ailing father.

- Slipshot: Chris Kennedy , vice chairman of the event, kept quiet. Gov. Quinn, who told Sneed recently that Chris Kennedy was one of his heroes, was also there. And so was first lady Maggie Daley.

- The upshot: The event raised more than $600,000.

(snip)
