KURT Campbell can shoot from the hip and September 11, 2007 was no exception.
Writing on a blog on The New York Times that day, having recently returned from a family trip to Australia, Campbell claimed that George W. Bush and "his massive entourage" diverted from a secret trip from Iraq to Sydney the week before just to help out an "old mate" John Howard get re-elected.
"While the agenda in Australia also called for a meeting with 21 Asian leaders to discuss weighty policy matters like global climate change and to listen attentively while others opined - just the kind of venue the president dislikes and performs so poorly in - the real purpose of the visit was to try to bolster Howard as he heads into what may be his last general election in the coming months," Campbell wrote.
I travelled with Bush on Air Force One for that APEC trip. Campbell's analysis of it was patently absurd.
I spoke to Bush in the boardroom of Air Force One en route from Iraq to a refuelling stop in Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. There was not a mention, nor even a hint, from Bush or any of his entourage that the upcoming election in Australia was even on the radar.
Bush was keen to point out and champion Washington's interests against those of Beijing as Chinese President Hu Jintao travelled to Australia signing up resource deals. Bush duly signed a new security pact with Howard.
In any case, the thought that Bush, whose international popularity was in the gutter at that point, could be a bonus for Howard in his contest against Kevin Rudd was a weird claim, to put it mildly.

Apparently kurt campbell will be zero’s assistant secretary of state for East Asia.
Bush goes to Austrialia...Obama goes to New York City. Big deal to both!!! They are the President of the United States. I think traveling anywhere allows a President to give a reason for stopping. Domestic and Foreign affairs can always be used.
