Jay Leno Palin joke

Posted on 06/13/2009 8:41:31 AM PDT by Nomad577

I guess I'm just trying to be devil's advocate or something, there have been hundreds of jokes.

"Gov. Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. And you thought John Edwards was in trouble before! Now he has really done it." -- "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," 9/2/08

That one was more a slam on Edwards than Bristol.

1) He clarified which daughter, it wasn’t the 14-year-old

2) He didn’t suggest that she be raped

end of story

YOU, need to pull you head out of your ‘arse’ IF you see any REAL similarity between your example and Letterman’s deed.

Lame and ugly joke. But not even close as disgusting and vile as Letterman joking about rape of minors and prostitution.

Actually, the implication in both cases was the same: statutory rape.

Unless the age of consent in Alaska is 16 or something, which I don't know.

What Nomad said, obviously a (well deserved) slam on the Breck Guy.

Everyone likes Jay Leno...leave him alone. The reason that Letterman is getting heat is because he is very disliked and he has been rather snarky since he was passed over from Jay Leno back in 1992 (?)...He is hated!!!

Plus, everyone at the time agreed that it was pretty scuzzy and rotten to keep bringing Palin’s children into their smearfest. I don’t remember anyone here saying that was OK back then.

Letterman’s “joke” was illustrative.

It showed in brief both how hateful is the left and how depraved.

Please. How funny would it be if Letterman said Michelle Obama looked like a slut? Letterman and his audience disdain Palin and think it’s real funny to make toxic jokes about her. They’re vulgar boors.

Both the content AND the Comedian (Letterman) were despicable.

Letterman is a bitter, unfunny hack whereas Leno is funny and as best I can tell, equal in his humor. JMO

That joke seems to acknowledge a problem with the situation — Edwards was in trouble for it. It was a knock at Edwards, not Palin. The Letterman joke called statutory rape “uncomfortable” when done in a baseball stadium ... and seemed to target a child, not A-Rod. [By the way, am I the only one that doesn’t get the joke? Why A-Rod? Has A-Rod knocked-up someone? I get the Edwards joke ... the A-Rod one is a bit lost on me.]

To be fair — I think there has been some overreaction. Letterman is what he is. It was a tasteless obnoxious joke. It wasn’t the first. It won’t be the last. And there are much greater offenders than Letterman.

Correct, this was not as egregious but quite similar.

People here like Leno, but no one should accept this as OK

Bingo.

#1 Later after the storm started to save his azz at "suggestion" by Corporate Attorneys I would Imagine.

#2 Knocking up a 14 year-old by an adult is in itself Rape.

Try again.

Yes there have been but be very wary of making false equivalencies. The left does that all the time - every day. It becomes such a pattern that people don't even recognize it after awhile.

Leno's joke is borderline but Letterman's was clearly way-way-way over the line on many levels then he lied about it. That's what contributes to making the parallel between the two jokes false, IMO.

Leno’s joke was amde during the heat of the Presidential campaign. Letterman’s child molesting lust rant was made when Palin did a charity event for autistic children.

I would assume so. 16 is the age in most juristictions of the western world.

To be fair — I think there has been some overreaction.

you want to see over reaction, a big name conservative should make a snarky joke about lettermans wife and them having a child out of wedlock..THAT will bring an over reaction from the left that would make this letterman dustup look like childs play..
