Riot police beat protesters with truncheons as violence flared yesterday following Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s landslide re-election – amid allegations of widespread ballot-rigging.

Tehran saw the worst public uprising since the country’s Islamic student revolution 30 years ago.

Thousands of protesters wrecked cars and set up barricades of burning tyres after the Iranian Electoral Commission declared Mr Ahmadinejad had won 62.6 per cent of the 30million votes against 33.8 per cent for his rival, Mir Hossein Mousavi.

While I don’t like seeing people suffer, these riots give me hope for Iran. It’s the people rising up and refusing to be oppressed that will ultimately set them free.

They will be a nation worthy to take their place along side the rest of the civilized world, in time, but it has to come from within. Our interference, or forced change at the end of a gun (or nuke) won’t do it.

Maybe one day their future generations will look at these pictures and see patriots that spilt their blood for freedom, and they will appreciate that freedom is not for free but worth preserving with one’s own life if necessary.

Interesting their riot shields say "Police" in English

As conjectured on another thread -- oversupply of shields manufactured for use in the Obama-nation.

AussieJoe, you are so correct.

There are a few FReepers who knew first-hand Iran before the mullahs.

As Rush said, the president of Iran is purely symbolic, because the real control comes from the mullahs.

Kind of like our pOTUS with Soros and ??

Sharif don’t like it. Rock the Casbah!

If Obama had any smarts instead of apologizing for Mossadegh 56 yrs ago, he’d be doing all he can to get rid of Khameini and the mullahs today. I’m no fan of Obama, but if got rid of Khameini and the mullahs he’d have done more to end terrorism than any President in US History. I’d vote for him in 12 based soley on that.

They’re as vulnerable as they’ve been in some time, maybe ever. If our CIA is worth anything, they should be able to foment something, support the protestors, funnel them cash, equipment, etc...

Bush did a lot against terrorism but he had 8 yrs and he didn’t lift a finger against the mullahs. This is Obama’s moment. He can seize it and dump them once and for all. It would be the biggest forign policy victory by the US since the end of the Cold War.

We’ll see what happens.

Preview of 2012?

Incumbent president is defeated, but a rigged election keeps him in office?

“Bush did a lot against terrorism but he had 8 yrs and he didn’t lift a finger against the mullahs.”

Wasn’t one of the big “gaffes” the Bushies made in foreign policy is that by going into Iraq they insisted that if they established a chance at Democracy in the region, that others, including Iranian moderates, might topple the mullahs? Thought I read that somewhere ;^)

Bambi will probably bring himself down here by creating such misery that people will be clamoring for his birth certificate as an easy, bonfire-free way of getting rid of him.

And which congresscritter is going to be the first to stand up and demand the impeachment of the first black president?

Totally rigged. Check out this site: http://www.peiknet.com/1388/10khordad/22/PAGE/39EFSHA.htm

It’s in Farsi, but the first line says “Musavi 19 million, Karubi 7 million, Ahmadinejad 8 million

Totally rigged.
