Speaker Pelosi Visits MN To See Stimulus In Action Reporting
Jun 7, 2009 6:34 pm US/Central
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - Speaker of the U.S. House Nancy Pelosi paid a visit to Minneapolis on Sunday. Pelosi toured a school where federal economic stimulus money is helping put young people to work this summer. She was also here to raise money for Democratic U.S. Representative Tim Walz.
Young people greeted Pelosi in Minneapolis in a traditional way with Native American drums. The American Indian Opportunities Industrialization Center (AIOIC) is a place where both culture and advancement come together. Students at the AIOIC are benefiting from summer jobs created by the economic stimulus package.
"As a mother of two, this employment will help me support my family. Without this program, I would have a harder time finding a job," said Dea Garza, who will be working this summer in health care.
She's one of 43 people at the AIOIC who will be working this summer thanks to $107,000 in economic stimulus funds. Minnesota will eventually receive around $3 billion from the recovery act. The summer job recipients are among the first Minnesotans to benefit. Pelosi toured the school, though WCCO cameras were not allowed.
"I can go back to my colleagues and say that the intention of the law is being fulfilled in Minneapolis and it is being fulfilled in a way that's is a model for the nation," said Pelosi.
Political analyst Larry Jacobs says there's another reason Pelosi is putting the focus on economic recovery.
In part, it said "Despite the fact that Pelosi has recently accused the men and women of the CIA fighting terrorists of lying to Congress, Walz sees fit to make her a headliner at a fundraiser in Minneapolis."

Why am I thinking casinos?
Native Americans beating drums is not a welcoming, it’s a stereotype.
Ah... so the taxpayers get to pay for a fundraising trip because she calls it "work related". Nice.
ignoranus: ignorant ahole.
Did they find Nancy at the bottom of a lake?
So Pelosi comes to my state to raise money for my idiot congressman and does the fund raising in the metro area rather then in his district?
