SATURDAY/SUNDAY Reports reaching us from islamic iran now indicate a wave of arrests has taken place creating a very "pregnant" situation where anything can still happen, though the arrests have taken out opposition leadership:

1. Former President Hashem Rafsanjani has been arrested and taken to be held at the house of Supreme Ruler Ali Khamenei, where he was forced to resign as the head of the Expediency Council and Council of Experts. He is being held there until further notice to be at the pleasure of the Supreme Ruler.

Rafsanjani not only spent money to oppose Ahmadi-Nejad's re-"selection" but also made a big mistake of threatening the Supreme Ruler with the fact that the councils headed by Rafsanjani were the ones who had to declare the eligibility of the Supreme Ruler and could remove him from office with a quick vote.

He is not expected to emerge alive from his detention.

BBC says election broadcasts disrupted from Iran

This sounds less and less like a revolution and more like a coup by the mullahocracy against the somewhat more democratic elements in Iran. If this drives whatever remains of the opposition further towards the west, good. A shame for Persia that people like Obama would be their to meet them.

It is a coup by the group around Ahmadinejad that want to protect their money, I agree with this:

anyone who pays close attention to Iran could see the writing on the proverbial wall: Ahmadinejad's "privatization" scheme, the IRGC's heavy influence in the economy, the populist condemnation of "corrupt" clerics from Ahmadinejad's camp, and so on.

I stick to my point from yesterday: Iran is no longer a theocracy. To blame this on "The Mullahs," or worse, Iran's "Right-Wing" is to fundamentally misunderstand what is taking place there. This is a secular power grab done under the guise of Islam and revolution. The perpetrators are the enemies of western rapprochement, and the proponents of economic isolation. The Revolutionary Guards benefit from Iran's economic isolation, much like the mafia benefited from prohibition and other criminalized behavior. As any stereotypical movie gangster might say, "why ruin a good thing?"

I believe we are witnessing the disposal of Islamic pretense, and in fact a more honest and apparent Iranian police state. How that affects their place in the region and the world is still to be determined.

Commment: The next phase, if Ahmadinejad can hold the steering wheel, is to arrest the oligarks, nationalize their assets and money and "give it to the masses", i.e. a mixture of Chavez and Putin. He will purge the Iranian administration, and give more money to the Quds force, i.e. the terrorists. Naturally, this will destroy the Iranian economy and the Theocracy, and there will be another violent change again.
