South Africa World Cup 2010... and the shooting's already started
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | June 14, 2009 | Aidan Hartley

Posted on 06/14/2009 5:39:18 PM PDT by SloopJohnB

Only 70 miles from a 2010 World Cup football stadium, a farmer's wife and a boy aged 13 learn to defend themselves with lethal weapons. They say thousands of white landowners have been killed by Zimbabwe-style marauders; their black rulers accuse them of belligerence and right-wing tendencies...

Why does this sound so familiar...whites are being oppressed by a black despot who’s way over his head. Hmmmm..

Excited about the World Cup, as always. The WORLD’S most love and beautiful game.

France 98 was the hugest party since the end of WWII. Only time you could climb the Bastille monument without getting arrested. And I did.

What a view.

Didn’t go to Germany, (no fan of theirs) and unsure about South Africa. But I heard the country is incredibly beautiful. One friend called it the trip of a lifetime.

So I’m still thinking, gotta do it.

Brazil has the hottest babes with the best vibe on the planet. Yes, it’s a country with problems though.

I’d be more interested in Brazil than South Africa I guess.

But I want to go to more World Cups. It’s the only time nations have national pride on the line, and go to “war” in the beautiful game and people are nice all around.

You have to experience it to understand. It’s like the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the NBA finals, World Series all rolled into one. Globally.

When I read Kim du Toit's essay years ago, it speaks of the wanton killing there:

"The death toll wasn’t just confined to my friends. When I was still living in Johannesburg, the newspaper carried daily stories of people mauled by lions, or attacked by rival tribesmen, or dying from some unspeakable disease (and this was pre-AIDS Africa too) and in general, succumbing to some of Africa’s many answers to the population explosion. Add to that the normal death toll from rampant crime, illness, poverty, flood, famine, traffic, and the police, and you’ll begin to get the idea.

My favorite African story actually happened after I left the country. An American executive took a job over there, and on his very first day, the newspaper headlines read:

"Three Headless Bodies Found".
The next day: "Three Heads Found".
The third day: "Heads Don’t Match Bodies".

You can’t make this stuff up."

South Africa is a wonderful place with great food and interesting sights. However beautiful is not what I would call it. It is a large grassy plateau with lots of coastline.

I was in Bulawayo visiting February '81, about six months after Mugabe took over (the week many were killed there).

I returned to visit again in 2000. What a change in infrastructure...gas lines similar to ours in the '70's. The people visited working there from California got out the following year.

You obviously don’t know or have any history playing the game.
Best to keep ignorance to oneself than broadcast it.

I’ve been to a couple of dozen World Cup matches and have seen zero fights.
I did however see millions of people take to the streets of Paris without any violence whatsoever.

Stay in your kitchen and have a beer.

No, I do, however, have plenty of history playing other stick and ball games. I did so in my youth and found the experience to be quite worthwhile in teaching me accountability to others, working selflessly as a unit to achieve a group goal...it even helped pay for some of my university education.

But after I grew up, I placed things like silly nationalism, at least with regard to national stick-and-ball-game playing in their proper perspective.

Funny how Europe, where they will gladly piss all over their own culture in the effort to avoid appearing "nationalistic" finally finds some outlet for their latent jingoism through a stupid ball game.

Stick to stickball. It’s not a Europe thing. It’s THE WORLD’S MOST LOVED SPORT.

Gee, if you want to be the ugly American, you don’t have to broadcast the ignorance and revel in it. Just crack open a beer, let the belt out another inch and wait for the heart attack.

Don't be an ass. If you didn't notice, I wasn't denigrating your silly sport vis-a-vis America's silly sports, so your pathetic attempt to rebut me by using the standard Eurofag "we hate America" comeback is amusingly misplaced.

Enjoy your silly amusements while your Godless culture collapses.

Was trying to keep you from broadcasting ignorance as virtue. You missed the opportunity. Sorry about that.

Merely pointed out the foolish comment about Europe. The game is global.
And it’s the number one game, end of story.

Now go crack that beer and drown the homoerotic tendencies before wifey figures it out.

Merely pointed out the foolish comment about Europe.

Which comment was that, the observation that the only expressions of patriotism (nee nationalism) in Europe are reserved only for silly ball games, or the hypocrisy contained in the European critique that only Americans ar "patriotic?"

And it’s the number one game, end of story.

And "American Idol" is the number one show....and I still don't care. If "soccer" is the current pinnacle of European achievement, I weep for your forefathers. How disgusted they must be.

Now go crack that beer and drown the homoerotic tendencies before wifey figures it out.

How puerile.

beautiful country. Stay out of Johannesburg, if you can. Cape Town is gorgeous, as is the Eastern Cape and if you can, go to one of the game reserves. It'll be a highlight.

It's a beautiful country ..the people are amazing. Very proud, friendly & welcoming. Politically, though, it's a mess.

Will the Boer farmers be able to immigrate to the US with the same deal the Palestinians are getting?

Oh, PS. Soccor’s silly. Best spectator game is football. Chess not checkers. Poker. You can accrue territory. You have downs and stop play so you can talk to your friends about what they’re going to do. You never miss the action because you know when it’s going to happen.

You try to turn a discussion about the the most beautiful game into some home Euro baiting thread and then you complain about the discourse.

Look in the mirror FRiend.

If you have an issue with the EU might I suggest you protest in Brussels.
This is not the thread for it.

Real football (soccer) is both an art and a chess game.

But some may find a bunch of juiced up 300+ guys slogging around as artistic.
20 years ago, it was rare to even have two 300 pound guys.

How’d that happen?

Actually, the discussion was about whites being brutalized in SA, while the rest of the enlightened world yawns. That you want tell the world how excited you are about some ball games doesn't automatically take precedence.

That being said, I agreed with your point that the only time Europeans seem patriotic is when watching their ball team play. Why my agreement bothers you is hard for me to understand.
