COLUMBIA, S.C. - A former chairman of the South Carolina Election Commission has apologized after his posting on Facebook suggested a gorilla that escaped form a Columbia zoo was an ancestor of first lady Michelle Obama.
Minutes after the gorilla’s escape was reported Friday, Rusty DePass posted: "I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors — probably harmless."
The comment has since been deleted, but DePass confirmed to WIS-TV that he made it, apologizing and saying it was a joke about statements Obama has made about evolution.
DePass is a former chairman of the Richland County Republican Party. He didn’t respond to a phone message Saturday from The Associated Press.

Good question. I am not going to defend what this guy said, however, Republicans always end up apologizing and/or getting diversity training. Democrats and liberals tend to say that Republicans don’t understand humor and satire and can’t take a joke, and NEVER apologize. David Letterman’s apolgies were pathetic.
Guess what, Dilbert; If I ever become a public figure and then say something deemed “awful..gasp” by the PC crowd and they demand me “apologize”: I’ll tell them (1st Amendment) free Speech, and ‘shut-up’ and won’t do it (mind you I won’t be a jerk and say things that are unkind intentionally).

I see it on this website also, and it is stupid politics stooping to DU levels.
I think that, even way more than Hillary Clinton, she has angered a lot of people with her past hateful statements such as, "For the first time in my life, I'm proud to be an American." That is just one of her many ignorant comments in the past. Many of us look upon the double standard, which is that Sarah Palin and other conservative women and their children are valid targets for the trash on the left. I think that inspires people to feel comfortable returning fire.
Comments like this S.C. pol's will be used by ABS, et al to downplay that cretin Lecherman's attacks on Palin. It sure is fun to make fun of her though.

You are 100% correct. Dumb, mean-spirited jokes are wrong regardless of who tells them or regardless of who is the subject of the joke. How in the world could this guy possibly think this is funny?

I don’t see why he should apologize, since this was clearly in jest.

Okay, but when party leaders call out the First Lady of the United States as a gorilla, it also alienates white voters.
And with an increasing Hispanic population and an increasing black population combined with the recent decline in the percentage of white people voting Republican, it will be difficult for the GOP to win future presidential elections.
And in ten years Texas will be a Democratic state along with Florida, California. New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania that are already Democrat, that will be 189 Electoral Votes before you begin to add in Massachusetts, Washington, Oregon, Delaware, Vermont, New Mexico, Connecticut and DC.
The bottom line is that your desire for a whites only party in not going to work.
