COLUMBIA, S.C. - A former chairman of the South Carolina Election Commission has apologized after his posting on Facebook suggested a gorilla that escaped form a Columbia zoo was an ancestor of first lady Michelle Obama.
Minutes after the gorillas escape was reported Friday, Rusty DePass posted: "Im sure its just one of Michelles ancestors probably harmless."
The comment has since been deleted, but DePass confirmed to WIS-TV that he made it, apologizing and saying it was a joke about statements Obama has made about evolution.
DePass is a former chairman of the Richland County Republican Party. He didnt respond to a phone message Saturday from The Associated Press.

True its a dumb move.
However, if I was Rusty DePass, “I’d say I am as remorseful as David Letterman.”
I don’t see why he should apologize, since this was clearly in jest.
More Democrat double standards: I can say whatever I want, but those who quote them will be penalized.
Good thing Michelle not wearing the horse lashes. She looks much better.
Screw the “AfricanhyphenAmerican” vote.
Okay, but when party leaders call out the First Lady of the United States as a gorilla, it also alienates white voters.
And with an increasing Hispanic population and an increasing black population combined with the recent decline in the percentage of white people voting Republican, it will be difficult for the GOP to win future presidential elections.
And in ten years Texas will be a Democratic state along with Florida, California. New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania that are already Democrat, that will be 189 Electoral Votes before you begin to add in Massachusetts, Washington, Oregon, Delaware, Vermont, New Mexico, Connecticut and DC.
The bottom line is that your desire for a whites only party in not going to work.
Well good luck trying to promote conservatism by comparing African-Americans to monkees.
In this case the apology was in order; however, he should end it right there, not go on an apology tour.
I can't see that type of revolting "humor" gaining any voters of any race. Why would such a "joke" make anybody more likely to vote Republican?
Macaca part deux.
My guess is that such jokes by GOP officials alienates voters of all races.
Care to elaborate?
You post that, or any other image like that again, Mr. Duke - and I’m banning your racist ass.
My post isn’t racist. Nice attempt, though.
