Who needs Mass when the country now has “The One”?

“...Who needs Mass when the country now has “The One”?...”

PBS board might pull the plug on WLAE's daily Mass

or it might face the loss of PBS programming such as "Barney & Friends," "The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer" and "Charlie Rose," all of which currently air on WLAE.

I'm not particularly religious, but I'd say that's a fair trade.

Why does a New Orleans station broadcast Mass from the St. Louis Cathedral?

It is not shown here in St. Louis by our local communist PMS station.

The magnificent St. Louis Cathedral, BTW is actually one of the handful of Basilicas in the world. It has the largest collection of decorative mosaic tiles of any building on Earth. Much like the cathedrals of medievel Europe it took several generations of the same artisan family to complete the tile work.

Next time your local PBS station runs one of its begathons...give them a call and tell them what you think.

Mass has always been televised, for the elderly, or shut-ins. It is very important for them. We are a predominatly Catholic city. Even our football team (the Saints) got the blessing of the Archbishop before taking on that name.

Why does a New Orleans station broadcast Mass from the St. Louis Cathedral?

Because that's the name of the cathedral in New Orleans, LOUISiana. Where a parish church, later elevated to Cathedral, was erected under the patronage of St. Louis when the upriver city at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri was a settlement of heathen indian wigwams.

The city of St. Louis has a splendid cathedral basilica, also named for St. Louis. Contrary to your understanding, churches with the designation basilica are actually fairly common worldwide. We have one ourselves.

My understanding (from the offical tour), is that the designation of Cathedral Basilica is what is rather rare, not simply Basilica.

Why are tax dollars being used to televise a religious service? If it were a Muslim service (what ever they call them) would you support it? This is the government supporting a particular religion. I want PBS to broadcast my Lutheran church’s services too.

Beautiful Church.

I understand now. The NOLA St. Louis Cathedral, not the St. Louis Cathdral Basilica.

Our own PBS station in Western New York and Jamestown, NY, does classical music, some of which I enjoy. But I learned quickly to hit the remote whenever the news comes on because it is:
1. Almost always delivered by British voices pretending to give the news of this country, or by CBS.
2. Always slanted to the left.

And we’re helping to pay for it with our taxes.

I guess my argument would be...that if there’s a demand for any service by any religion...and local network television doesn’t provide...PBS might.

Wasn’t the orginal idea for PBS to do something about television being a “vast wasteland”?

I have two local NPR stations...one does classical music and jazz...because no one else does. The other does all liberal politics all the time.
