Thus far in 2009, 40% of Americans interviewed in national Gallup Poll surveys describe their political views as conservative, 35% as moderate, and 21% as liberal. This represents a slight increase for conservatism in the U.S. since 2008, returning it to a level last seen in 2004. The 21% calling themselves liberal is in line with findings throughout this decade, but is up from the 1990s.

How about this question?

When you enter a polling booth, would you describe your reasoning ability as high, moderate, minimal or not at all?

Calling oneself a conservative means nothing if the walk doesn’t match the talk.

Gallup’s last poll showed that 39% of “conservatives” gave Obama a positive approval rating. I’m much less interested in how people choose to describe themselves, and much more interested in how they vote.

I don’t believe Gallup’s polls - either the favorable or the unfavorable ones.

Great...

Liberals who think they are “conservatives”...

Like Powell and Megan McCain...

If there were anywhere near the number of “conservatives” as claimed Obama would have been driven from office already.

This is why so many polls are skewed. Many conservatives will not describe themselves as ‘republicans’, so if the only choices are ‘independent’, democrat, or republican...some of us just say ‘independent’.

Fiscal conservatives & catholics elected Obama. Wishing for the good ole days of Clinton-Gingrich balanced budgets , they watched the 600 million in ads of a clean cut african american talk about cutting taxes and balancing budgets and putting off his “moderate” agenda until we can balance the books after tarp was passes. Catholics decided to put charity ahead of life and went with the canidate more likely to give away money on charity issues.

Then a lot of folks just couldn’t stand McCain.

Add it all up and we got ourselves a communist.

Idiots!

The article notes that the electorate appears to be more polarized than in the early 90s (which was the previous high water mark for polarization). I thought that Barack Obama was “post-political”, that he “transcends politics”, and believes in “one America”?

The CBCaucus and the radical democrats want to think they are the majority. They are not. This is why they attack and utilize the media to promote Palin as stupid. (Most Americans think Palin is a ditzy Tina Faye.) Clinton was "just" a gov. of a hick state and no one questioned his credentials.

There is no conservative male politician threat to them because none are as outspoken as Palin. Huckabee could be a threat the way the marxist dems are acting. The blue dog democrat is no longer represented in the democratic party this will be their downfall...

ACORN will steal the election for them so they think they can let their commie hair down and be radical.ACORN must be dismantled legally and properly immediately.

Moderates = liberals in denial.

I would put Moderates in the clueless category. They have no idea how Liberal Obama is. Most moderates actually are more conservative than liberal. Most oppose gay marriage. Most favor reasonable controls on abortions. Most favor smaller government and less taxes. Most favor a strong military. Most favor capitalism.

The MSM selected McCain for us because they saw the numbers and wanted a moderate. Then when he won, they painted him as a Conservative so the moderates would vote for Obama.

Obama won the tax-debate against McCain — that’s how he won. McCain a self-described moderate did not defend conservative principles to rally. He told people they would get lower taxes. It’s as simple as that. Many conservatives heard Obama’s tax plan to significantly lower taxes for working families and bought it. It was part deception and part lack of vigilance.

"It looks like not many but the far left want to be associated with it."

They may not want to associate, or at least identify themselves as one, but they're more than happy to vote for it. And, in the final analysis, that's really all that matters.

When both house of Congress are controlled by Democrats, by wide margins, and when the most liberal President in the history of America is decisively elected, then there's more liberals than there are conservatives, regardless of what the "liberals" choose to call themselves. To think anything else, is just whistling past the graveyard.

ACORN to a greater extent than anyone wants to admit or address. That and having put just about the worst candidate we could have in the race. And not bothering to use what The One handed us on a silver platter because it was “negative campaigning”. And telling true conservatives shut up because people like Powell said they were mean. And giving moderates no reason to believe they weren’t voting democrat whichever candidate they voted for. And ...

We elected a Marxist because moderates knew he was the only candidate the incumbents in congress wouldn't deliberately screw from day one. They're sick of that crap. If someone with a pair, like Sarah, had been the candidate, they'd probably have stuck to democraps having congress and a republican president, the moderate reaction to business as usual in DC.

Yeah, he ran as center left, democrat. Lots of folks are surprised to learn he is a Marxist.

About 6 months before the election, when it was looking like 0bama might take the nomination from Hillary, Tom Delay was on Fox & Friends. Steve Ducey ask Delay what he thought of 0bama. Without hesitation, he said, "He's a Marxist!" Ducey nearly croaked, then quickly cut to a commercial.

Simple: The GOP didn’t offer a conservative alternative. McCain was to the right of zero, but not much and certainly not enough.

As Rush says, we win when we run conservatives. And that scares the H### out of the near-socialist GOP. Why do you think the national party is so scared of Gov. Palin? And her continued massive popularity and drawing power (which the near-socialist GOP honestly cannot understand due to almost leftist level of cognitive dissonance) despite the lack of support and even active opposition by the national party just proves the numbers in the article...

PS Palin/anyone 2012!!!

Yup. A GOP President and Congress were elected to be conservative but bought into the beltway (and MSM) dogma that they needed to move to the middle to retain power. Instead, when they did, conservatives got so disgusted that they turned on the GOP and stayed home in droves...

Not only that, when he appointed a true conservative as VP candidate he stifled her every move(still couldn't stop her from increasing his numbers though could he?)and refused to let her be herself. He wasn't trying to win the election but he would have won anyway if he hadn't made that stupid trip to DC to support the bailout BS.
