Fox News: Iranian Soldiers firing at will into crowds demonstrating against election theft
Fox News Channel | 6/15/09

Posted on 06/15/2009 10:55:53 AM PDT by pabianice

This is an apparent escalation in violence resulting from protesting the theft of the election. Apparently, Ahmadinejad is claiming that he won in every city, every district, and every street, even those in his opponent's neighborhood, with something like 85% of the vote. (Makes me think of Chicago).

These are not soldiers, but Pasdaran and Basij paramilitaries. We need to keep them apart.

And our President sent congratulations on winning the Chicago way.

One wonders if he had ACORN over there working for him ... I don’t think this is going to quiet down for quite sometime, and if they are shooting into the crowd it could be a big mistake for those currently in power.

Or maybe not. In the best of all possible worlds, we see a little red on red action, followed by a true democratic reform. When I was in school, in the days of the Shah, there were scores of Iranian grad students around and they were almost universally a$$holes. Either communists or anti-Shah nationists or hedonist. Almost no Islamists, though. That crowd didn't go to university in the days of the Shah. Some of the women dressed very "western" and some wore the veil. The westernized ones were mostly stone foxes. Strange people.

Thanks for making the distinction.

Pasdaran, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and Basij, a volunteer militia established by revolutionary leader Ayatollah Khomeini.

This reminds me. In the early days of the Islamic Republic the ayatollahs organized street thugs to deal with opponents. I believe Hezbollah evolved from street thugs.

Ummm.. I wonder. Was Obama thinking of that when he spoke of the contributions that type of Islam has made to America? His ACORN evolved from street rabble and who knows what other gangs lurk ready to administer Obama justice to opponents. Sorry.. I couldn't resist and only partly kidding.

I disagree. The bad guys among the armed forces are the Revoltionary Guards, the Basij miltia and the Hezbullah (plus the Secret Police).

The regular Army (Artesh) is strong, but was neglected by the regime in favor of the fancied Revolutionary Guards.

The Artesh consists of normal conscripts and career officers, many of them from the Shah era. Same goes for the normal Police.

There is resentment in the Army against the Guards and Co. and the Army is reluctant to fight their own compratiots unlike the fanatical Guards.

Iran needs an armed force to maintain stability and most importantly the opposition needs a source of armed strength versus the thugs. This can under the current circumstances only come from the regular Army and Police.

The childs of the islamic regime (Guards and miltias) need to be eliminated, disarmed and defeated.

A functional Country will need an Army and Police, as we have seen in Iraq.

We aren’t going to intervene in any form in Iran. It’s up to the people and their strength has to come from within, which can only mean the Army.

Sorry, I think there was some miscommunication between us. You mean we need to keep the PHYSICALLY apart (?).
I meant we need to make a DISTINCTION between the units.

Yes, I agree that when the sh*t hits the fan, the Army and Police need to blaze away on the Guards and thugs.

I forsee the iranian thugocracy being toppled in much the same manner as the Shah was overthrown.

The people want freedom to express themselves and are sick of living under such oppression and the more the mullahs tighten their grip to retain their power, the more people will resist.

Killing civilians in the streets is traditionally one of the 'red lines' that the mullahs have not crossed, as the Iranian military could stop its neutrality and step in to defend the people. That's why they've traditionally employed foreign rent-a-mobs and militias to use non-lethal violence and intimidation.

If the killing is more than a few sporadic deaths, there could be a great backlash and breakdown of authority. Their conventional military is largely patriotic and pro-Persian, as opposed to the more extremist Qods force Islamist types. Street massacres, especially ones that become public knowledge, will clear the benches. Emailed digital photos and Twitter may be the leverage to get them moving and get the real revolution started.

I understood you, I was just making a point off the rebound, a rhetorical trick.

I’m not aware of all the factions, but I suppose the analogy is like the distinction between the SS and the German Army. The SS were, at least initially, ideological fanatics, the German Army more representative of the population. The Iranian armed forces must remember that they fought a ten year stand off with the Iraqis, whom we rolled up in 100 hours and then stopped (1991) and in three weeks (2003). They know that if they piss off the American people like they did in 1979, and elect a new Reagan, we could be in Teheran in a month.

The problem in Iraq was trying to be the cops to restore civil order, especially in the face of dissent at home. The absolute last thing the Democrats and there auxilaries in the LSM wanted to see as a US success in Iraq. Those miserable quislings killed three thousand American servicemen to ensure electoral success.

It might become bloodier than 1979. The Shah, unlike his image, was averse to bloodshed. He refrained from using maximum force and left (under pressure from inside and outside) the country.

This time there will be a showdown with the radicals, and the Army better side with the rebels.

“those who did not react to Tiananmen Square have doomed the rest of us to watch it repeated...”

Who was supposed to react and who is making you watch it? Why is what is going on in another country your or this country’s responsibility? Why are you trying to drag the rest of us into another country’s issues? We have our country for a reason and that is so we don’t have to act like nor be treated like those in other countries. If something like Tiananmen Square happens here we will take care of it our way ourselves.

Did you just come out from under a rock...need we go thru the recitation of the Islamic attacks on the western world...including 9/11?

Iran is the fountainhead of a great deal of the violence...especially in Israel and Iraq.....granted they have used proxies...but they support all of them...

"These are not soldiers, but Pasdaran and Basij paramilitaries."

Then the Iranian regular Army units need to chime in on the side of the people - they are all conscripts, they need to help their own.
