TOLEDO, Ohio – Residents of Toledo, Ohio, are complaining that they received $25 tickets for parking their vehicles in their own driveways.

Mayor Carty Finkbeiner (FINK'-by-ner) says he stands by the citations handed out last week by the Division of Streets, Bridges and Harbor. He says the tickets were issued under a city law against parking on unpaved surfaces, including gravel driveways.

Hey, DB, speak for yourself.
The reason most of us are at this site is because we are precisely not like your description of many others.

Mayor Finkbeiner is in his 3rd (interrupted) term as mayor of Toledo. Previous fame came from ordering company of USMC Reservists to abandon an urban training session because he hadn't been personally informed (Police knew and approved at least 3 days earlier). As others have said, he is facing a recall confirmation in November unless he can invalidate enough signatures of a 20k petition. Needless to say he is holding on to office like a rabid d**.

Well if you are going to tar and feather a public official, your neighbors, and your friendly Freepers will insist you wear your seat belt and stay off the cell phone while doing tarring and feathering. Safety is paramount.

They also support Traffic Light Cameras and drive 54-55 mph in the left lane on the interstate till they get to their exit LOL.

I guess hundreds of the folks that got these tickets should ask for a jury trial. I’d bet most juries would let them walk, and it would cost the city a fortune to try them all in court.

My grandparents never had a paved driveway. I think it’s ridiculous to ticket people for parking there.

The bigger question which people should be asking is this: Who passed such a draconian law, and why didn't the citizens protest it before now?

I can't believe that NOBODY thought of problems with a law against parking on an unpaved suface. That just SCREAMS "likely to be abused" to me.

So the Mayor, Carty Finkbeiner thinks that the wild interpretation of the law is cool?
I see an abbreviated tenure for Finkmeister, and a law introduced in the state legislature to clarify the matter. I guarantee that the initial law was not intended to apply to unpaved driveways or areas on private property.

Interesting that they would lay off police officers and send the remaining force to bring in more revenue rather than violent and theiving offenders.

Schadenfreude(sp?)

Until the new portable, remote sensing, RFID GPS enabled MRI scanners are installed in your car, home, public places and work, they can’t tax that. Yet.

My coworker suggests that homeowners get two $25 bags of quickcrete, lay down two thin strips of concrete, just long enough for his vehicle. Park it there and give them the "Hawaiian Good Luck sign". (Aka "The Byrd", the Finger, etc, etc). :)

Downside of that is that they probably require a permit and inspection for any concrete work. :(

Not only that, the city said that more layoff is possible. Just watch the crime- in fact, Toledo had a history for been a violent city.

More ideas for revenue enhancement (combined with glorious social engineering for the greater good of all the peoples and trees and civil order):

- make it illegal to be in a moving motor vehicle without driver and passengers wearing a helmet, with a $100 fine per helmet-less person

- $100 fine per minute for smoking within 100 feet of a child (multiplied by the number of children in the vicinity)

- $5 fee per minute for smoking tobacco; reduced to $2 if inside your home or car (unless the windows are open)

- $20 fine for throwing recyclable waste into a landfill-bound receptacle, per 0.1 ounce

- $100 fine for taking up more than 1 parking space, per 20 minutes so parked

- $20 fine for poor parking (being within 2 inches of any line marking the parking space)

- $25 fine for failure to wash hands after using public restroom (per unwashed hand)

- $10 fine for improper hand washing after using public restroom (per improperly washed hand)

- $15 for your lips coming within 0.25 inches of a public water fountain faucet

- $5 public playground use fee per child per hour

- $25 fine for BBQing meat outdoors, per 100 calories

- $30 fine for BBQing indoors per 20 minutes

- $25 fine for consuming more than 1000 calories at any restaurant within a 4-hour period

- $100 fine for carrying an ipod, pager, cell phone, GPS device, radar detector, or any non-factory-installed audio/video device within the passenger compartment of a moving automobile

- $100 fine for having tinted auto or home windows (per pane)

- $25 fine for failure to refer to a peace officer as “officer, sir” if officer is male, or “officer” if officer is female (per peace officer so offended)

Just like the gravel driveway fine, this should be good eatin’ for the lawn order crowd.
