Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) has acknowledged an extramarital affair with a campaign staffer in a statement released by his office. "I deeply regret and am very sorry for my actions," said Ensign. He is expected to announce the affair at a press conference at 6:30 pm tonight. The affair, which was with a woman who worked for both Ensign's re-election campaign and his Battle Born leadership political action committee, began in December 2007 and ended in August 2008. Ensign's wife, Darlene, said that the couple's "marriage has become stronger" and added: "I love my husband."

so what, a politician had an affair. Isn't that as news worthy as the Navy bought a boat?

Who cares? Democrats have affairs all the time. Don’t let the Dems and their leftist allies use this against Ensign.

Well as long as his wife didn’t have cancer like John Edwards or as long as he didn’t have sex with that woman like the Slick One, I guess it is OK. After all he is a politician and that is just the way they are and he is a man and I have been informed here that men just can’t help. Besides she probably threw herself at him and he was powerless to resist. Poor weak man, we must excuse him because after all he can’t help himself.

Yea! How about a President We dont even know His Real Legal Name, Where he was born , if he was born, anything about his past including drivers Licenses, Passports, Associates, Drug Arrests,School Grades, Who Funded his Education, a one sentence Medical Record, and GOD only knows what religion he is IF NOT MUSLIM! Somehow, it seems every rogue nation knows every detail about ZERO’S PAST HISTORY and Will Extract Much to Maintain those Secrets!! Did we just hear ZERO has just approved selling the entire Technology and Design Packages for the B-2 Bomber to the Chinese for a Free Invite to Next Year’s Chinese New Years celebration?

It guarantees an endless amount of bad press for every Republican across the country because we all all HYPOCRITES and LIARS and SEX-OBSESSED.

The media eats this stuff up -- when the guy is a Republican. Democrats largely get a pass because the wife will say something like "I love my husband" or "This made our marriage stronger" and the media will pat the Democrat on the head and say it's nobody's business anyway. Republicans can't get away so easily.

On a personal level, I recognize that people have failings, and I would try to get past it. On a political level? This guy is doing serious damage to the party, and the GOP should make it very clear that he needs to GO GO GO.

In your opinion SatinDoll.

He had an affair while separated from his wife.

I would still vote for him.

Call it what you want.....

We have to purge our ranks of the useful idiots, enablers and RINO’s now if we are to have a strong, viable and meaningful Republican party.

Otherwise, just continue to support the status quo and allow the Republican party to be the “Democratic Lite” party....

“Because one of the former staffers (the husband?) was attempting to blackmail him.”

I read that it was the husband who was asking for money. Also said that the affair occurred when they were separated, if that lessens the taint any. John Edwards can father a child while his wife is dying of cancer and no one says a word, but God forbid a Republican do something that pales in comparison.

Not really. Congress is also a reflection of society and the percent of extramarital affairs are stunningly high in our society. I really don't expect Congress to be any different, but that doesn't make it OK.

And it has been stated that this occurred while they were separated. Since the husband tried to shake Ensign down, it doesn't make him appear as bad since the scum wanting money seems worse.

A mighty ugly situation all around and a reminder that people in public office and in sensitive positions in govt are ripe for blackmailing.

This is tragic. We don’t need any more conservatives messing up and giving the enemy, ah, I mean “loyal opposition”, talking and laughing points. Keep it in your pants gentlemen.

Just checked. Looks like Ensign has an ACU rating of 93.97. What exactly will "purging" him acomplish?

Congress is also a reflection of society

I'm under the impression that the average American is a lot smarter than the average Congressman.

Ensign made a very bad decision, and it will damage his reputation greatly.

However, this will have zero impact on the GOP as a whole. None. In the midst of the crumbling economy and Obama’s agenda, this will get scant attention beyond a week or so on MSNBC and lefty blogs. It is beyond a stretch to try to attach this to any other Republican in the country.

Get real.

Exactly. Some people around here don’t know of what they speak. Ensign is a great conservative, who made a very bad decision in his personal life. His reputation will take a hit, but that’s about it.

That's taking it too far (I never thought only 5 months of 0bama would make me less criitcal of Clinton).

Caligula, if I remember from History and not the movie (never saw) had sex with anything and everything, including boys and probably farm animals.

Clinton was probably more like Commodus or Nero and 0bama like is more like Elagabalus or Caracalla. Historians claim that Commodus marked the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire.

I think GW Bush was more like Claudius.

They were separated at the time?! I think I’m willing to cut the man at least that much slack.

Frankly, though, I think we’ve long since established here that having a squeaky clean personal history and toeing the party line are far more important qualifications for public office than little insignificant details like competence. Hence, the leadership of the Republican Party will continue to be populated by clueless pantywaists.

Some people don’t seem to understand that we keep “purging” the party to the point that we now have nothing to stop the Marxist in Chief.
