Sen. John Ensign has been quick to describe his dalliance with an aide in brief and simple terms. The affair is over. The apologies made and accepted. No questions will be answered, the married Nevada Republican said in his brief admission of infidelity.
But the first public statement from the woman once involved with the 51-year-old rising political star suggests more is brewing behind Ensign's neat account.
Cindy Hampton and her husband, a couple Ensign has described as "close friends," issued sharp remarks Wednesday through an attorney.
"It is unfortunate the senator chose to air this very personal matter, especially after the Hamptons did everything possible to keep this matter private," Las Vegas lawyer Daniel Albregts said in the statement. "It is equally unfortunate that he did so without concern for the effect such an announcement would have on the Hampton family. In time the Hamptons will be ready and willing to tell their side of the story."
The lawyer declined to answer questions.

He should switch parties. What he has done would be a resume enhancer in the Rat party.
I admit to never having heard of Senator Ensign
The media that still hasn’t covered the incredible John Edwards story headlined the Ensign story as a “blockbuster”.
If republicans let this crap cost them another Senator they are more stupid, well no they are still as stupid as I thought.
This little business about him being blackmailed is why it mattered when Clinton was covering this stuff up as president. In fact his “cover story” with Lewinsky was that a foreign power was trying to blackmail him. But of course the media’s brains were switched off on that one.
If Ensign's claim of attempted extortion is accurate, this is disingenuous, at best.
It seems to me that the Hamptons are the ones who spilled the beans as to the identity of the woman. Ensign never named her.
Perhaps Mr. Ensign had someone with no ethics, *cough* clearing my throat, blackmailing him unless he votes a certain way on a certain bill....so maybe he chose to expose the truth himself so as not to be forced to obey the blackmailer.
This is what happens when politicians do foolish and corrupt things.
Many people get hurt.
The coverrup is always worse than the crime...when will politicians ever learn that?
While in no way condoning Ensign’s extra marital activities, I’d like to see him stand up at a presser and recite verbatim EVERY excuse/rationale that was made by the MSM for Bubba...and BTW..whatever happened to Stabenow..the MSM let that one slide after 24 hours..is she still married to him?
This does show a lack of character and judgement of the Senator. But why must ONLY Republican politicians resign when caught in compromising situations? Especially when Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Charlie Rangle, and “Cold Cash” Jefferson(list can go on and on) are still in their positions after committing actual CRIMES!!!
How did Obama clear the way for himself prior to Illinois elections? I wonder whose fingerprints are on this one?
The Senator is truly guilty of ONLY one offense.
He follows his name with (R). Period
If the trailing letter was (D) this story would not have made his local monthly village tattler.
The “Free Press” has become the worst enemy of the 1st amendment.
