U.S. Fortifies Hawaii to Meet Threat From Korea

By YOCHI J. DREAZEN

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. is moving ground-to-air missile defenses to Hawaii as tensions escalate between Washington and Pyongyang over North Korea's recent moves to restart its nuclear-weapon program and resume test-firing long-range missiles.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Thursday that the U.S. is concerned that Pyongyang might soon fire a missile toward Hawaii. Some senior U.S. officials expect a North Korean test by midsummer, even though most don't believe the missile would be capable of crossing the Pacific and reaching Hawaii.

Mr. Gates told reporters that the U.S. is positioning a sophisticated floating radar array in the ocean around Hawaii to track an incoming missile. The U.S. is also deploying missile-defense weapons to Hawaii that would theoretically be capable of shooting down a North Korean missile, should such an order be given, he said.

"We do have some concerns if they were to launch a missile to the west, in the direction of Hawaii," Mr. Gates said. "We are in a good position, should it become necessary, to protect American territory."

Here’s what I posted on Sandrat’s thread:

So let’s say this is all a ruse, on the part of Chia Head, and we’re falling for it. I predicted to some friends the other day that the Norks would send out a suspicious boat (ala Gulf of Tonkin) that will serve as a causus belli, and sure enough they did. A worst case scenario-—NK lets fly a missile, purportedly headed in the direction of Hawaii, but it explodes 100 miles up over the Sea of Japan. Ha ha, right? But this time it’s a nuke that explodes, and sends an EMP that knocks out all of the electrical grids and electronics of Japan and South Korea, not to mention our US military . Meanwhile the Norks themselves are hiding out in their tunnels, and what little gadgetry they do have exposed is vacuum tube crap from the sixties that’s largely impervious to EMP insult.

They simultaneously loft a missile in the direction of Diego Garcia, with the same result. Then they come storming out of their tunnels and march on Seoul.

At Launch time we need to subversively transmit a Gyroscope trajectory change towards China.

End of NK problemo.

I don’t know what they are worried about. All I heard on November 5, 2008 is how much the world loved us again.

Besides if it happens it is what the voters in Hawaii voted for. !@#$%%^& them.

If we still lived in America, wouldn’t we just knock the stupid thing off it’s launch pad & call it a day?

Yeah because we don't have ANY military establishments in Hawaii much less your regular American citizens.

Just because they voted for the Messiah doesn't mean they deserve to get nuked.

With what? Are we really in a position militarily right now to fight another war on the Korean peninsula?

The answer is no, we aren't. Besides an action like that would only give North Korea more attention (like it wants) than it deserves.

Can somebody explain WHY we’re even going to let this happen?

I am wondering the same thing, am also wondering why this is not the top news story on every station. Since when does the U.S allow other countries to shoot missiles at our country?

Didn’t the Dems just cancel missile defense? Why isn’t an ad running in Hawaii regarding this? Doesn’t the GOP want to win in 2010?

I don’t think the Hawaians are gonna get nuked. I think, just as did the last two Taepodong 2 missiles, this one’s gonna explode, but this time intentionally, and over the Sea of Japan. And it’ll have a nuke on it that goes ka-blooey.

Not to worry, Citizens. Your Messiah just chopped $1.4 BILLION out of our missile defense budget. Gotta buy votes with that money, even if it means leaving you defenseless against madmen with nukes and missiles.

I own a timeshare I have been trying to dump for about a year. I sure hope this doesn’t make it even more difficult to unload.

It doesn't work that way. Nukes won't explode just because the delivery vehicle explodes.

Thats one way and appreciate your post. But since NK has one of the largest standing armies in the world it seems they could just take Seoul with a conventional attack if they really wanted to. Its not like they worry about things like casualties.

So let’s take a poll in Hawaii and see how people feel about Ronald Reagan’s “Star Wars” program now, eh?

It works that way if it’s designed to work that way. Everyone thinks it’s headed out 4,000+ miles, but instead it is detonated over the Sea of Japan, and the resulting EMP wreaks havoc with everyone who has anything that works with electronics. That means everyone but the Norks, who don’t have any.

Palin is going to be on her own if they point their ding dong at Alaska.

I suspect Kimmy knows if he tried that, Sarah would show up at his chateau with a fish knife and cut his n*ts off.

He wanted to cut some budget costs, and with Hawaii off the list, he'll get his wish.

Nothing personal in this man ~ not one thing.
