That's no lady, that's my senator! (...in which rude and petty rule the day)
Power Line ^ | June 19, 2009 | Scott Johnson

Posted on 06/19/2009 6:13:21 AM PDT by yoe

enator Barbara Boxer (D., Cal.) has been schooled in the peculiar etiquette that Jill Biden observes. As a result of her Ed.D. degree, Biden insists on being called "Dr." by sodiers who unknowingly refer to her as "Mrs. Biden. (Dr. Biden explains) "Ya know, I worked hard for that degree." Now Poliitcs Daily reports that Senator Boxer shares a similar pride in her work:

At a sometimes contentious Capitol Hill hearing Tuesday, Senate Environment and Public Works Committee chairwoman, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), had a request for Army Corps of Engineers division leader, Brigadier General Michael Walsh.

During a terse exchange, as Boxer pressed Walsh on why the levees in New Orleans are still not repaired nearly four years after Hurricane Katrina, she said to Walsh:

"Could you say 'senator' instead of 'ma'am? It's just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title. I'd appreciate it."

The general's response? "Yes, Senator."

It's funny in a way that Dr. Biden and Senator Boxer are so rude in the name of their professed etiquette. Surely there is a joke here somewhere.

Brigadier General Michael Walsh answered with perfect manners and Ms. Boxer displayed her lack of class and manners....why aren't we surprised at the obvious distaste the left has for the men and women who daily keep rude people like Ms. Boxer free........beyond petty ms. boxer.

Boxer never earned the title of ‘ma’am, so Brigadier General Michael Walsh, was actually being overly polite. Boxer was more opposed to the title of Brigadier General Michael Walsh, so decided to knock him down a notch. After all, a Brigadier General, is a lowly soldier to her.

In case “Senator” Boxer doesn’t know (and it’s obvious she doesn’t), a Brigadier General actually earned his title whereas a Senator is only elected, she hasn’t “earned” jack.

I’d like to meet Senator Boxer personally. I’d tell her she works for me, not the other way around and I was going to do everything in my power to send her back to “Mrs.” status.

“Senator, we’re going to fire your sorry ass”.

What a pompous display of ill breeding and poor judgement. Boxer is an embarrassment to any woman of achievement. Now, unfortunately, people around the world can see this.

She and the other dems appear so angry. Why? They have what they wanted. Do they not know how to enjoy it? Or is it turning out to be not what they expected?

I went to a university where Ph.D.s were referred to as Mrs./Mrs./Ms, whichever applied. It was a matter of pride not to be called Dr.; that was left for MDs. Not sure if it’s still that way or not, but I always liked it.

Ph.D.s are usually scientists and dont have the god complex of most MDs. Thats why they are so much more laid back about being called Dr (even though the PhD is the higher degree). I’m just sayin.

I think I figured this out.

“Ma’am” points out the fact that she is a female. She, being a leftist “feminist”, considers such acknowledgement of her sex to be an insult.

Seriously, I think this is why she was bothered by “Ma’am”.

I don’t really have a problem with a Doctor asking to be called Doctor instead of “Mrs.”, so long as they do it politely, realising that the people they are talking to probably don’t know they are doctors.

Boxer should have known that the military uses “ma’am” and “sir” as honorifics. So if she was uncomfortable with it, she should have found a more polite way to ask “I know that you use “ma’am” as an honorific, but would you mind calling me Senator — I always think “ma’am” is my mother”.

She would have gotten her message across, the General would ahve called her “Senator”, and she wouldn’t have looked like an idiot.

Another thought. What does it say about a person that believes themselves so superior that common courtesy is beneath them?

It's actually correct to call him "General." Brigadier General is the lowest rank of General. It's Brigadier, Major, Lieutenant, then just General in order of rank. All are addressed as General.

Many people of short physical stature have a need to power over others.

I used to work for a man many years ago who was very short. He had the legs of the chairs in his office cut short, so that he in his chair, which was raised as high as it would go, would appear higher.

He also had a sofa in his office, and the legs of that sofa were completely removed so people who sat in it would appear shorter than he did.

Because I’m a tall guy, whenever I’d go into his office to ask him for something I needed to do my job, I always knelt down in front of his desk so I’d be eyeball to eyeball with him rather than towering over him. I tracked my in-office requests over a couple of years, and my requests were approved by more than a 50:1 ratio when I knelt down.

It seems bizarre to me today that I did that, but I REALLY wanted to do my job well, and the only way I could do that was by getting those requests, which usually meant spending his money, approved.

A few years ago, I worked in the library of a law school at a state university. One of our professors called the circulation desk, and the student who answered the phone addressed her as either “Ms.” or “Ma’am.” The student wasn’t in law school (he was in the library science program), so he had no idea who this woman was.

The professor was irate that the student had not referred to her as “Professor,” and seemed intent that we punish the student in some way. Nothing much ended up happening in the end, but the event just showed how petty and pathetic some of my co-workers truly were.

People who believe they are superior to others don't belong in politics. Actually, they don't fit in anywhere. When it comes to addressing people, myself included, it is the intent, and not the manner of address. Sometimes, I am called by my first name, full name, Mrs., Ms., Miss, or Ma'am. Clients also have called me Mom or Sister. Who cares, so long as they are respectful in their dialogue? I would have liked to see Brigadier General Michael Walsh, finish his discussion with her, using the word, Senator, but giving her a high class whomping!

Not to get all “Nancy Pelosi” on you, but that is not correct. I had an MD aquaintance that was convinced the MD was the highest degree and would disparage mere PhD colleagues as his inferior. He had to eat crow when after being challenged to look into the subject found that in fact the PhD was the higher degree and the MD merely a professional certification. He was such an @zz.
