MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) - A 23-year-old woman is accused of getting friend to kill her Jack Russell terrier and skinning the puppy to make a belt out of its hide. Krystal Lynn Lewis and Austin Michael Mullins, 26, were being held Friday in the Muskogee County jail on $25,000 bail each. They were charged with one felony count of cruelty to animals.
"We're talking about a 6- or 7-week-old defenseless puppy," said sheriff's deputy George Roberson. "That's pretty heinous and sadistic."
Lewis wanted the puppy, named Poplin, killed because it was a gift from a female ex-lover with whom she doesn't get along

The puppy was a gift from a former lesbian lover. You had to read until the end of the article to learn that. Once, the title would have been, “Deviant Charged with Killing Defenseless Puppy”.

I love dogs, and I think these people are sick for what they did in my eyes. But if the animal was hers and she/he killed it humanely then what is the difference in the eyes of the law between this and if she took it to a vet and had the thing put down?
I have family members who use to raise minks for their pelts, how is this any different in the eyes of the law than that?

I could see the cruelty to animals charge if they had skinned the dog alive or tortured it in some way. Since that wasn’t the case, I’m having trouble understanding the outrage.

Look, our culture considers dogs and cats (and I suppose horses) as something a little different from alligators and cows. It may seem crazy, but it’s how it is. I suspect there are laws (right or wrong) on the books in that jurisdiction that cover how a companion animal can be killed. I suspect shooting it numerous times with a 22 (and why so many times? Did they not kill it the first 9 times?) is not one of the preferred methods.
This appears to have been taking out her anger on a defenseless animal. One she had kept as a pet. That would concern me about how she might also treat another person.

This nation was founded on the major pillar of the rights of the individua...HUMAN. Animals have no rights any more than cars do. If you take a sledge hammer to your own car, have at it. But if you do it to your neighbor’s car, well, that is that “individual human’s” property and exactly the kind of thing our government is supposed to protect.
