A New York Times reporter known for making investigative trips deep inside dangerous conflict zones escaped from militant captors after more than seven months in captivity by climbing over a wall, the newspaper said Saturday.

David S. Rohde was abducted Nov. 10 along with an Afghan reporter colleague and a driver south of the Afghan capital, Kabul. He had been traveling through Logar province to interview a Taliban commander, but was apparently intercepted and taken by other militants on the way.

The Times reported that Rohde and Afghan reporter Tahi Ludin on Friday climbed over the wall of a compound where they were held captive in the North Waziristan region of Pakistan.

The two then found a Pakistani army scout, who led them to a nearby base, the Times said. On Saturday, the two were flown to the U.S. military base in Bagram, the Times reported....

Hold the applause - it's a New York Times reporter. How can we be sure he wasn't being held by the U.S. Military, so he wouldn't pose a legitimate security risk to the USA?

Taken care in the end by the US military which is despised by the NYT. How fitting...

An NYT reporter?

Thank Allah he's gone, Omar! I couldn't take one more day of 'Damn Cheney!' 'Damn Halliburton!' 'Damn Bush!'

Yeah, right. The guys climbed over a wall and then just happened to find an army scout out there walking in the wilderness. The Times paid the ransom, and the reporters were allowed to “escape”.

SHOOT HIM! HE’S A SPY! I would have said this even if he hadn’t been “held captive” for 7 months.

Why would the Taliban want to capture a NYT’s reporter? He is on their side.

Rohde: “Can’t we extend this “captivity” thing just a little longer?”

Omar the Taliban: “NO!! NO!!! By Allah, a thousand times NO!!! I learned a word today and it is LIBTARD. That is you! I hate you.. now, go escape or something. Just go away!!”

For some reason I don’t think we’re hearing the entire story.
The Taliban was probably paid off by the NY Times and it’s money I’m sure they were happy to donate to their favorite jihadis. I wouldn’t be surprised if this twerp actually went on a couple of raids against American forces with his buddies.

Where did they get the money from?

President Thomas Whitmore: I don't understand, where does all this come from? How do you get funding for something like this?

Julius Levinson: You don't actually think they spend $20,000.00 on a hammer, $30,000.00 on a toilet seat do you?

"We are very relieved that our New York Times colleague escaped safely, and this episode has ended happily," said AP Senior Managing Editor John Daniszewski. "It was an unusual and difficult news judgment to withhold reporting on his abduction, but our practice is to avoid transmitting stories if we believe they endanger someone's life." (emphasis added)

Unless, of course, during the Bush administration you were employed by the CIA and involved with prisoner interrogation at Guantanamo, then we’ll gladly splash your name all over our dying paper.

Why did he leave them?

His wife probably couldn’t cash the check the Mullahs sent.

So he climbed over the wall and left the driver behind?

Interesting choice.

Maybe the journalist found out what REAL torture is like? Or maybe he was compelled to to escape so he could hot foot it back to the NYT field office and write up a story about how the Taliban doesn't waterboard and how they even read him his Miranda rights!

I wonder if the driver is still alive now.

climbing over wall..hmmmm..so what was the guards doing while these two climbed over the wall? Was “The Three Stooges” on during their escape? How high was the wall? Climbing over wall is Hollywood stuff. Who is stupid enough to hold someone captive where the escapees can scale the wall?

I see a potential book deal and maybe Pulitzer prize for him.
