No Country for Burly Men (why stimulus not working)
Weekly Standard ^ | June 29, 2009 | Christina Hoff Summers

Posted on 06/20/2009 4:33:21 PM PDT by reaganaut1

A "man-cession." That's what some economists are starting to call it. Of the 5.7 million jobs Americans lost between December 2007 and May 2009, nearly 80 percent had been held by men. Mark Perry, an economist at the University of Michigan, characterizes the recession as a "downturn" for women but a "catastrophe" for men.

Men are bearing the brunt of the current economic crisis because they predominate in manufacturing and construction, the hardest-hit sectors, which have lost more than 3 million jobs since December 2007. Women, by contrast, are a majority in recession-resistant fields such as education and health care, which gained 588,000 jobs during the same period. Rescuing hundreds of thousands of unemployed crane operators, welders, production line managers, and machine setters was never going to be easy. But the concerted opposition of several powerful women's groups has made it all but impossible. Consider what just happened with the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Last November, President-elect Obama addressed the devastation in the construction and manufacturing industries by proposing an ambitious New Deal-like program to rebuild the nation's infrastructure. He called for a two-year "shovel ready" stimulus program to modernize roads, bridges, schools, electrical grids, public transportation, and dams and made reinvigorating the hardest-hit sectors of the economy the goal of the legislation that would become the recovery act.

Women's groups were appalled. Grids? Dams? Opinion pieces immediately appeared in major newspapers with titles like "Where are the New Jobs for Women?" and "The Macho Stimulus Plan."

Nothing to do with race but I totally agree. Both the Russians and Irish illegals here in NY are excellent workers.
Both tend to be hard drinkers after work (at least the ones I know) but they rarely miss a day of work.

“Why didn’t Porkulus create tons of new jobs?”

Because it was crafted in the 6 months prior by Daschle et al, in back rooms, anticipating that Obama would be elected.

It basically was the omnibus spending plan for every idea the Dems wanted over the next 4 years. The Dems simply used the crisis to get it passed.

Yes, the rest will be spent from Aug-Nov. 2010. The American people will never, never figure it out.

It's a different world here.
Up until the ozero phenomenon our unemployment was always 0.
Anyone who wanted to to work could always find a job, not so now however.

“Over my dead body.”

I hear they’re willing to count that provision in as part of the bargain. As a matter of fact, I’m sure you’ve read here on FR about chemo being denied in Oregon when assisted suicide is approved.......

I wish I were kidding.

___
On another subject...

Around these parts, I am starting to see not only stores close as per usual, but also grocery stores cut hours and more expensive departments/high cost items. There’s a look in people’s eyes. Even younger ones.

Back during The Great Depression, President Herbert Hoover ordered the deportation of ALL illegal aliens in order to make jobs available to American citizens that desperately needed work.

Harry Truman deported over two million Illegal’s after WWII to create jobs for returning veterans.

And then again in 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower deported 13 million Mexican Nationals! The program was called ‘Operation Wetback’. It was done so WWII and Korean Veterans would have a better chance at jobs. It took 2 Years, but they deported them!

Now...if they could deport the illegal’s back then - they could surely do it today!

I have lost quite a few friends over the election.

I think maybe in fact the family is better off without them. In the long run, it does matter whom you trust.

Once we go to socialized medicine, the population will be forced to submit to having their lives run by the federal government.

Over my dead body.

...which they are probably counting on to make KenyaKare viable.
