Earthquake ping
Don't remind me... I live in Memphis.
We felt a definite rolling motion, strong enough to knock someone off balance, but I don't believe there was much damage. My first guess was around M4.0, so I was surprised to see M5.7. Alaska has over a hundred quakes a day, and every once in a while, we get one we can actually FEEL. LOL!
Not only will this be blamed on Bush, but, now Palin.
The oil pipeline recently withstood a 7+ earthquake, as I recall...
However, there still can be injuries/deaths with the smaller quakes...
No. Mt. Redoubt is still erupting ("gently") but it would be about 250 miles from the epicenter.
5.7 is a humdinger. I hope to God it is not a foreshock of something bigger.
Actually, Michigan and other midwestern states do get the occasion minor quake as the earth continues to rebound after being compressed for thousands of years under miles of ice.
Red Puma, a good source for info about quakes worldwide, lists the Alaska quake as 5.9:

My son and family live in Anchorage. Any news about damages?
Well...not necessarily. I felt one when I lived in western Michigan. It was sometime around 1985 or ‘86.
58 miles from anchorage.. near the town of Willow.
Strong earthquake jolts urban centers of Alaska
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090622/ap_on_re_us/us_alaska_quake
ANCHORAGE, Alaska A strong earthquake jolted urban areas of Alaska on Monday, sending people diving under desks and huddling in doorways.
The U.S. Geological Survey said an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 struck near the town of Willow at 11:28 a.m. Monday. The epicenter was 58 miles from the state’s largest city, Anchorage, where the rumbled continued for several moments.
5.7? Wouldn’t that just about be David Letterman dropped from a great height?
Umm. We should be asking you.
5.7? I'm sure they are fine.
Only if he landed head first.
no reports of injuries so far,, some smaller bumps since the 5.7 hit ,, a 4.1 , missed this one by 2 weeks.. ;-) (knock on wood, lightly)
No, but his wife would.
LOL!
Wifey & I were teachers at Mentasta in 03 when we were right on a 7.9; biggest shaker we ever experienced. My well head which was in the laundry room, blew off and had a geyzer hitting the ceiling for 2 hrs, imagine the ground pressure. The ground opened up in front yard, half expected to see the devil come jumpin out. 4 foot wide hole, that was 5 foot deep, and the ground moved sideways about 10 feet too. Really affected the elevation by 10 feet or so, but didn’t realize it until winter when overflow was different everywhere.
When we lived in MatSu, we had 5’s & 6’s pretty much every spring; wasn’t a big deal; lived in a log cabin.
Up here along the Yukon, we don’t even have good shakers to speak of, kinda miss them.
Didn’t feel a thing 300 miles SW of Anchorage.
