NET LOSSES

Steyn on America

Monday, 22 June 2009

A mere year ago the notion that the government would take over General Motors would have seemed incredible. Yet here we are, with the president of the United States firing the CEO and personally calling the mayor of Detroit to assure him he has no plans to move the head office out of the city. Not literally, not yet. But in any practical sense it’s now headquartered in Washington. In another twelve months, I wonder what currently unthinkable scenarios will have become faits accomplis.

Exactly so, in every respect. Steyn nails it again.

Sometimes great powers decline slowly, almost imperceptibly, as Britain did for much of the 20th century. Sometimes it’s more sudden and convulsive. Obama is attempting Euro-statism, but, unlike Europe, without the counterweight of America to preserve some approximate relationship to reality. Which is to say I do not think this decline will be genteel, for America or the world.

I really wish I could think of a counterargument.

We don’t need one. Wiser minds have already agreed. As C. S. Lewis put it, there are progressions in which the last step is sui generis, in which to take it is to undo all the work accomplished in all the previous steps. Lewis was talking in the context of the reduction of morality to a mindless phenomenon of nature, but turning the whole world’s financial engine socialist is also such a move.

You may be right, I see no sign at all that Zero will stop his progression until it's all fulfilled or he's defeated.

I'm increasingly thinking he may push this to where 2010 could be a repeat of 1994 as the people will want some check on him.

Two words...”British Leyland” (Google it).

Obama is just following an accelerated version of Britain's Post WW II Labor Party policy's.

Steyn is an early alarmist about the US economy and about Islam in Europe. Early alarmists can be wrong, if their alarm is heeded and behavior changes. So let’s hope he is and we begin to see that in the 2012 midterm elections.

I think there is a good chance the health care bill goes no where. Obama spent all the money on the Dim’s self stimulation. That is temporary politics which is good as national health insurance would be more of a permanent change and harder to undo.

Interesting turn of phrase. LOL!

Ha! Don’t tell Steyn or he might steal it or maybe I stole that phrasing from him.

This is now a land that rewards failure — at the personal, corporate, and state level. And, as conservatives well know, if you reward bad behavior, you get more of it.

Nothing much more needs to be said.

Your unreadable newspaper has just woken up from its 96-page Obama Full Color Inaugural Souvenir bender to discover that its advertising revenue has collapsed with the real-estate market and GM dealerships? Hey, lighten up, Senator Kerry’s already been pleading your case in the Senate.

Is it really so hard to picture President Obama calling the mayor next spring to assure him he has no plans to move the New York Times out of New York?

A must read!

So let’s hope he is and we begin to see that in the 2012 midterm elections.

Sorry, Mid-term elections are in 2010. So two years sooner than your prediction. Hopefully we change congress in 2010 and the Presidency in 2012.

Regards,

TS

Stein rocks!

He always exactly nails it and his wit is so sharp it should be a registered weapon :)

And I always really enjoy it when he sits in for Rush (although I like the other guest hosts as well).

Alright JLS,

“Steyn is an early alarmist about the US economy and about Islam in Europe..”

You have 100 chips and you have to bet all on one outcome or the other...will Zero win or fail?

Obama winning or failing is not the same as the US winning or failing. Fortunately the American people has shown time and again they can over come back pols.

If I had 100 chips, I would put them on:

1. the economy causing cap and trade to fail.

2. the budget situation causing nationalizing health insurance to fail.

But then I am an optimist.

3. the GOP making gains in 2010 if not winning a majority.

That’s an eloquent waffle, but still a waffle. Up or down? It’s your 100 chips and they are on the line.

I am not sure what you consider a waffle? I picked the two most important pending issues and said I thought they would fail. Does that mean OBama has failed in your light? Then I put my 100 chips on him failing. Other might suggest those failures could save his presidency.

A waffle is typing 200 words in response to a question which requires a one word answer. Obfuscation is a handy tool to create confusion and uncertainty; a simple “yes” or “no” is clear, which you have not been.

My apologies. I reread your responses and they were fine. I am the one in error. Too many cold ones, I guess. Sorry.

The money quote. America at the precipice. Steyn is one of the best analysts out there, not to be ignored.

Except of course by the all-knowing leader.
