Nuclear Nightmare
IBD Editorials ^ | June 22, 2009

Nuclear Proliferation: Al-Qaida says it will use Pakistan's nuclear weapons against the U.S. if it ever gets the chance. We're not surprised. Nor would we be surprised if it eventually got the opportunity.

"God willing, the (Pakistani) nuclear weapons will not fall into the hands of the Americans, and the mujahedeen would take them and use them against the Americans." So says Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, al-Qaida's top commander in Afghanistan, where the terror group has found a friend and ally in the Taliban.

If you think 9/11 was bad, just wait until al-Qaida gets a nuke, which is not as far-fetched as it sounds. Based both in Afghanistan and Pakistan's untamed northwest frontier, al-Qaida in April launched a major offensive into Pakistan's Swat Valley, engaging in fierce fighting with Pakistani army forces.

Swat is just 60 miles from Pakistan's capital of Islamabad. If al-Qaida beats the Pakistan army in Swat, what will keep it from marching on Islamabad and gaining control of the Pakistani nuclear arsenal — said to number as many as 55 warheads? If you said Pakistan's ISI intelligence agency, guess again. It's riddled with fundamentalist al-Qaida sympathizers.

If this isn't frightening enough, the U.S. stands under direct threat of possible attack by a nuclear power — North Korea. That country, in the destabilizing throes of a leadership change, warns it will launch a missile on July 4 toward Hawaii — even as the U.S. shadows a North Korean ship containing nuclear contraband.

If this happens on 0bama’s watch...

He’s already cementing himself as worst president in the history of the US. That would be the nail in the coffin of the moderates who voted for 0bama because he looks cool.

The chances of terrorists detonating a nuclear bomb on American soil in the next 3-5 years are pretty remote. The chances of terrorists detonating a nuclear bomb on American soil in the next 10-15 years is a certainty.

“where the terror group has found a friend and ally in the Taliban”

Unfortunately they have a friend in the White House too...

It’s not that they would detonate a nuclear bomb on American soil. They could detonate on just as well on one of our allies soil

On the bright side: given the coup-prone nature of the Pakistani state, I assume that the designers of the Pak nukes installed PALs or some sort of security devices on the bombs in order to assure positive control. If so, the Towlies would not be able to arm the weapons — any attempt to arm a weapon without the proper PAL codes would trigger its PAL’s self-destruct function, rendering the weapon unusable. They would then have to take the “physics package” of each bomb apart and basically build a new weapon around it — a difficult and time-consuming process.

It was a "nuclear nightmare," while I posted hundreds of warning articles about Iran's building of nuclear weapons forces. Those were answered with all kinds of jeering, scoffing jokes and other slippery anti-defense comments. After the extremely frustrating realization of the the depths of our US apathy and unwillingness to fight, I'll call it a nuclear entertainment show. When it happens, I'll sit on these mountains and shout, with a beer in my hand, "I told you so! I told you so, but you wouldn't listen. Ha, ha, ha, ha ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha ha, ha, ha!"

Americans, support and elect a man with former enlisted (not officer) Army experience (in other words, a real man--not a woman or a SNAG). Otherwise, don't expect any sympathy or votes from me.

Where I wrote,...

“Americans, support and elect a man with former enlisted (not officer) Army experience (in other words, a real man—not a woman or a SNAG).”

...make that combat training and/or combat only—no REMFs, either.

We have 10% unemployment, and NK is bragging about bombing Hawaii.

Can we agree this Administration is ineffectual - please?

All these serious threats and we have a flea weight trying to pretend to be a president. Obama is dumber then I thought if he believes his wimpy overtures don't embolden the enemy.

The Fuhrer is going to take the Congress down with him. The American people are very very angry and that anger is growing. Once a Conservative Leader comes forth and exposes the Socialist and the plot behind him, the tidal wave will roll all over him and the Congress.

Whre is the anger manifested? I don’t see it or don’t sense it from the obama bumper stickers I have seen. Every idiot that voted for him in ‘08 will vote for him in ‘12 plus the ACORN recruits.

That he will take Congress and America down I agree with you on that because that was what he was placed in office for. But do not look for his supporters to turn on him. They do not have the intelectual capicity to form independent thoughts or they would not worship obama to start with.

I disagree in favor of Palin: I deem that she has the horse sense to name competent advisors in such matters, and to take their counsel.

Cheers!

Where I’m at, I don’t see Obama stickers. Democrats I’ve talked to want Zero gone as much as we do.

They would use them in a New York minute if they had them - President Bush kept us safe because he was strong. How long before we lose a city or two?
