Barbour to head RGA
CNN.com ^
Posted on 06/24/2009 1:14:29 PM PDT by Hawk720
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has assumed the chairmanship of the Republican Governors Association, CNN has learned.
Barbour immediately takes over as head of the national Republican campaign organization following South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanfords announcement he was leaving the post. Sanford acknowledged Wednesday that he had an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina.
The news revealed today hurts all of us who have gotten to know Governor Sanford over the years and so it is with regret that the RGA accepted Governor Sanfords resignation as chairman, Barbour said in a statement obtained by CNN that will be distributed Wednesday afternoon. While this news is deeply disappointing, I also know its important to remain focused on the future and Governor Sanfords resignation allows him and us to do just that.
Barbour added: The RGA has an important task over the next two years. I am committed to seeing it through and confident we will succeed.

Barbour is the WORST kind of RINO:
http://www.savethegop.com/2009/05/12/mississippi-rino/
Recently Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi was prominently involved in the launch of the National Council for a New America. His involvement, along with that of uber-RINO John McCain, made me question why the GOP was bothering to put a new coat of paint of the same old rusty edifice that has become the Republican Party. I knew it would only be a matter of time until one the National Panel of Experts involved in this effort went out of their way to visibly repudiate the conservative values they claimed to hold near and dear to their hearts.
It would appear that respecting property rights isnt an intrinsic part of being a Republican.
Haley Barbour has sabotaged eminent domain reform in Mississippi.
Since the Supreme Courts notorious 2005 decision in Kelo v. City of New London, which allowed that municipality to seize private property on behalf of the Pfizer Corporation, 43 states have passed laws protecting property rights against Kelo-style eminent domain abuse. Mississippi is not one of those states. .
But that nearly changed in March 2009 when the Mississippi legislature voted overwhelmingly in support of a proposed law which would have guaranteed that the right of eminent domain shall not be exercised for the purpose of taking or damaging privately owned real property for private development or for a private purpose; or for enhancement of tax revenue; or for transfer to a person, nongovernmental entity, public-private partnership, corporation or other business entity. .
In addition to enjoying strong bipartisan support in the statehouse, this piece of long-overdue reform was backed by groups as politically diverse as Americans for Tax Reform, the Southern Christian Leadership Council, and the Mississippi Forestry Association. .
But none of that mattered to Republican Gov. Haley Barbour, who promptly vetoed the bill, claiming it would cripple his ability to lure large corporations into the state. As Barbour, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, admitted in his veto statement, had he not promised Toyota that he would use eminent domain to secure a piece of contested land for its Blue Springs facility, Toyota would have broken off negotiations with us and chosen one of the other states competing with us for the project.
Or Toyota could have paid the market price the the land. It is not as if their is a shortage of cheap land in Mississippi or any other state for that matter. This dubious excuse exposes Gov. Barbour for what he is, just another big-government Republican.
Hat-tip: Club for Growth
Rebels Edit: For more background, check out Barbours Wikipedia page. On it, you will find more evidence supporting the notion of Barbour being a RINO. Hes been a controversial figure for a very long time, always in the midst of scandal. ESPECIALLY if you look at his 2007 signing of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and are familiar with his stance on signing a 50 cent Cigarette Tax.

How Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour sabotaged eminent domain reform
http://www.reason.com/news/show/133410.html
Last Thursday, the situation went from bad to worse, as Barbour introduced an eminent domain bill of his own during a special legislative session. It's a tricky piece of work, one designed to appease lawmakers and voters by borrowing some of the best language from the vetoed bill, yet with certain disastrous additions to the text. Here's how Barbour's eminent domain "reform" bill reads (emphasis added):
The right of eminent domain shall not be exercised for the purpose of taking or damaging privately owned real property for private development, for a private purpose, for enhancement of tax revenue, or for transfer to a person, nongovernmental entity, public-private partnership or other business entity, unless the taking of private property is authorized for a project under the Mississippi Major Economic Impact Act.

I think that you are confusing some things here, people are excited about Barbour becoming head of the Republican governors association, that is about winning campaigns around the nation.
This is the Haley Barber that we want to see for that position.
RNC Chairman (wiki)
In 1993, Barbour became chairman of the Republican National Committee. In 1994, during his tenure as RNC chair, Republicans captured both houses of the United States Congress, taking the House of Representatives for the first time in forty years. In 1997, Barbour ceased being chairman of the RNC.

Hmmm. You sure take great license to impugn a good man, with a terrific conservative track record, on one issue.
From the information in your posts on this eminent domain issue, Haley Barbour has clearly shown why he did what he did:
As Barbour, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, admitted in his veto statement, had he not promised Toyota that he would use eminent domain to secure a piece of contested land for its Blue Springs facility, Toyota would have broken off negotiations with us and chosen one of the other states competing with us for the project.
Okay, he's guilty of being a man who keeps his promises, as well as doing what he thinks is best for the greatest number of Mississippians. And:
"The right of eminent domain shall not be exercised for the purpose of taking or damaging privately owned real property for private development, for a private purpose, for enhancement of tax revenue, or for transfer to a person, nongovernmental entity, public-private partnership or other business entity, unless the taking of private property is authorized for a project under the Mississippi Major Economic Impact Act."
He doesn't like eminent domain either and so walled it off, except for when it was done as a part of a one-time economic disaster recovery effort. [do you remember Katrina?] Geesh.
To: WKB
Haley Barbour architect of the original “Big Tent”!
To: ansel12
And what will Barbour do as head of the RGA? Nominate and stump for Big-Government RINO candidates? He supports government taking of private property to enhance the tax base.
His stance on this issue, the respect of private property rights, an issue that is absolutely crucial to maintaining a free republic, is not a conservative position. How can we trust he will use his influence to support conservative candidates?
So, are you for Government taking of land? If you support Barbour it would seem to suggest such...
See how much fun it is to have someone misrepresent your position on everything based on a single association?

As one who has had pieces of two properties in this state involved in these type situations, I know exactly why Barbour supported this, and I do to. It is not in the same vein as the frivolous uses we often hear horror stories about. That is what the 'approved projects' bit was for, so private enterprises cannot just say "here we want that".
There have been several cases including the Nissan plant where people sat on property they never used and in a couple of cases did not even know they family still owned, demand outrageous prices and such.
Like I said, I as much as anybody understand the property rights issues, and am no real fan of the abuse of eminent domain. The only thing I hate worse is entire towns in Mississippi on Government assistance. If they need some of my land to get those folks jobs, I can live with it if i am given a fair return.
It is a question of priorities, and Haley's were in the right place on this.
