All Things Considered, June 24, 2009 · Documents obtained by The New York Times suggest members of the Saudi royal family may have provided financial support to extremists, including al-Qaida, in the run-up to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The documents are part of an ongoing legal effort by Sept. 11 families to hold Saudi Arabia and the royal family accountable for the attacks. New York Times reporter Eric Lichtblau offers his insight.

The Obama administration is supporting efforts by the Saudi royal family to defeat a long-running lawsuit seeking to hold it liable for the Sept.11, 2001, attacks.
The Justice Department, in a brief filed Friday before the Supreme Court, said it did not believe the Saudis could be sued in American court over accusations brought by families of the Sept. 11 victims that the royal family had helped finance Al Qaeda.The department said it saw no need for the court to review lower court rulings that found in the Saudis’ favor in throwing out the lawsuit.
The government’s position comes less than a week before President Obama is scheduled to meet in Saudi Arabia with King Abdullah as part of a trip to the Middle East and Europe intended to reach out to the Muslim world.

In an era where it costs hundreds of millions of dollars to buy a squadron of F-16s, some have realized that buying people is cheaper than buying hardware.

This cuts across party political lines at the highest levels of our government, regardless of whose in the White House. It would be interesting to hear what DUers have to say about this. I suspect they are so cynical that they would just shrug.
Your statement is not correct. The Golden Chain was a Bin Laden creation at approximately the same time that the Al Qaeda was formed at Khost, Afghanistan, in August 1988. It was to be used to finance his operation and its collectors were himself, Wael Julaidan, and Battargee, and his brother in law Jamaal Khalifa served as bagman. The men to be touched were known to him and to his family.
