Sanford Case a New Dose of Bad News for Republicans (New York Times Hopes)
New York Times ^ | June 25, 2009 | JIM RUTENBERG

Posted on 06/24/2009 8:44:26 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Republicans were just starting to breathe a little easier.

The news that Senator John Ensign had had an affair with a former aide who was married to another former aide was fading. Polls showed some voter impatience with President Obama’s policies, if not with the president himself. And the Politico, the insidery Web site that is widely read in the capital’s political precincts, even featured an article exploring the possibility of a Republican Party comeback.

Then Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina, a fiscal conservative seen by many Republicans as an attractive standard-bearer for the next presidential campaign, went missing. Worse, he returned.

His confession on Wednesday that he had been in Argentina with a woman not his wife — and not hiking the Appalachian Trial as his staff had said Monday — was another jolt of bad news for a party that has struggled to get off the ropes all year.

That it was the second such confession in little more than a week from a potential Republican presidential contender — Mr. Ensign had been exploring a run in 2012 as well — left party leaders dazed. They spent Wednesday alternating between gallows humor and yet another round of conversations about what the party stands for and who will give it its best shot to retake the White House.

“Personal circumstances over the course of the last week have managed to shrink the front line of the 2012 possible-contender list by 30 percent,” said Phil Musser, a former executive director of the Republican Governors Association.

Speaking of Mr. Sanford’s confession, Mr. Musser said, “The concern here is that this continues a broader narrative that is completely unhelpful to the Republican Party’s rebuilding — that’s life, but it’s a personal tragedy that fairly or unfairly compounds a series of problems.”

I think it should we should let it die a natural death. The libtards are going to continue to throw everything they can at us to distract us and play us.

I seriously doubt that Mark Sanford will be on voters minds in November 2010 for the mid-term elections. Nor will anyone be thinking about him in the 2012 presidential campaign. These events are bad news, but it’s not like a Democrat has never been caught in these circumstances.

It’s not a dose of anything for Republicans. Unlike the Commie DemocRATS, when one of ours screws up, we bounce him out on his ass. The Commie ‘RATS run to the floor in Congress and start making excuses and paying tribute to their adulterers. Sanford is finished. He just doesn’t know it yet. He needs to go back to Argentina and open a Taco and Margarita stand on the beach.

Sanford may have poisoned his future, but if the republicans act like conservatives, and fight this dive to 3rd world marxist dicatorship, they should be rewarded. Not so sure they will fight though.

If he were a Rat he would have denied the rumors and carried on for months. We have avoided a future election disaster or a compromised rino. We have candidates out there and we have no reason to apoligize for our standards.
We want law abiding, faithfull and tax paying candidates. The Rats can never say the same thing.

Didn’t the current governor of New York come out and admit to cheating on his wife “for years” after trashing the previous governor for cheating on his wife? LOL! ‘RATS are sick, sick people.

I think both Sanford and Ensign were considered potential GOP candidates in 2012. Interesting how they've both been caught so close together. Doesn't Obama have a history of eliminating his opponents ahead of time? Not that these guys were any less guilty of wrong-doing, but it is amazing that it was these two that were outed.

The Republicans need to RESIGN IN MASS. I’ve posted this before and believe it more now.....They are not fighting the leftists, just gathered in a circular firing squad providing all the ammunition to the Commistat press and the DEMONCRATs to blame everything on the Republicans.

Let the SCUMBAG DEMONCRATS own the whole SWAMP.....the quicker to bring this whole MARXIST takeover to a head—to Revolution.

I think God is cleaning house, literally.

The times ahead are going to be tough .. and we’re going to need strong, principled people in office .. not squishy, womanizing girlie-men.

And .. certainly not men who become a traitor to their marriage, their wives and their children .. because they could easily become traitor’s to their country.

When God cleans out the dead-wood .. we gain a well-oiled machine .. thereby giving us a sure and steady road ahead.

It’s really amazing how Obama tricked Sanford into going to Argentina. Not. The idiot outed himself.

“It’s really amazing how Obama tricked Sanford into going to Argentina. Not. The idiot outed himself.”

If he was a teenager we would say he had a case of raging hormones. In his case he is just acting like a politician. The political class is party independent. We need Statesmen and Patriots running for office, those that put the Constitution and welfare of their fellow citizens above their own needs.

Like the Marine we need a “Few Good Men or Women.” Semper Fidelis should mean something to more people than just the Marines. Maybe Obama boot camp will be as effective with the general population as twelve weeks at Parris Island is for knocking sense into some and understanding loyalty to a higher cause than just self.

Two things: this Sanford is a dope if he believed he could keep his extramarital stuff under wraps while taking his girlfriend abroad with him. Second, who cares? This is between Sanford and his wife.

I don't believe for a second that Obama had anything to do with it. But if he did, he's the best friend the GOP has right now. These guys could never have survived the media scrutiny of a normal presidential campaign, and with the media abandoning all pretense of impartiality in their adoration of Obama, 2012 is going to be anything but normal.

There's luck, there's bad luck, and then there's Appalachian-Argentina-Honey-Trap bad luck.

The NYT scolding republicans is like bill clinton giving a sermon on fidelity and marriage. If all the molesters and perverts at the NYT resigned, only the janitor and doorman would be left standing.
